On my way back to Gulu from Kitgum, where I had spent the better part of the day at the National Memory and Peace Documentation Centre, I decided to make a little detour to Aruu Falls. By the way, if you have never visited the National Memory and Peace Documentation Centre, you should. The team at @refugeelawproj has done an incredible job documenting and preserving Uganda’s experiences of conflict, transitional justice, and peacebuilding. There is so much history in that place, including stories we must never allow ourselves to forget. Anyway, back to Aruu Falls. I went there to sit, reflect, meditate, and have a little conversation with the gods. 🤣 Among the things I told them was that I had finally and successfully thrown away the English name I adopted in Primary Four. You see, as a little boy, I was embarrassed by my African name because other pupils laughed at me for not having an English one. So, to fit in and escape the mockery, I gave myself one. Imagine being made to feel ashamed of your own name, in your own country, by your own people! And imagine carrying that shame into adulthood without even realising how much it had shaped your identity. Well, it has taken me many years, but I have finally come full circle. I told the gods that I had returned to my roots, legally, culturally, and unapologetically. No borrowed identity. No shame. Just Ojok Okot, as my people intended. I hope the ancestors are pleased. 🤣 There is something deeply satisfying about making peace with the little boy you once were. Now, before I turn this into a whole sermon about identity and decolonisation, let me tell you something about Aruu Falls. For those planning to come to Gulu for the @TheGuluMarathon on 5th December, please do yourself a favour and include Aruu Falls on your itinerary. The water levels are relatively low at the moment, probably because of the unpredictable weather patterns, but the scenery is still absolutely beautiful. The fresh air, the rocks, the sound of flowing water, and the peaceful surroundings make it a wonderful place to spend a few hours away from the noise of everyday life. And you don’t have to figure out the trip yourself. My friends at @LoremiTours can put together a lovely tour experience that allows you to explore Aruu Falls and discover more of what northern Uganda has to offer. So, as you train for the marathon, start planning your trip too. Come for the run, stay for the experiences, discover the beauty of our region, and leave with stories worth telling. Northern Uganda has so much to offer, and I would love for more people to experience it. Gulu is calling. Come and see for yourself! 🥰👌🏾😍

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY: Yesterday we inspected roadworks we have initiated and supported in Gulu District, Acutomer Village. The new road which was previously a footpath is over 6 kilometers. Before that we had begun by grading a 5 kilometer stretch from Moroto Road which is part of Gulu City. We have done this in partnership with Ministry of Works and Gulu District. They provide the machines (grader, bulldozer, roller/compactor and low bed truck) and we pay the operators and buy fuel. It is costly but seeing the smiles on the faces of the residents is our biggest reward. Building community roads from scratch is something we have done since 2008. Now the community can take what they produce in their gardens to the market. In addition, when they fall sick vehicles can reach their homes and take them to hospital instead of being carried on makeshift stretchers to reach a motor-able road.

What a feeling this becoming big and better 5th December Kaunda Tujja
In 2024, I participated in the @TheGuluMarathon as a runner/walker. A couple of friends, acquaintances and I had planned to walk or run just 5km. Somehow, we ended up doing 10km, and quite frankly, we could have gone another 10km because the conversations we had along the route became far more interesting than we had anticipated. 😂 In 2025, I returned, this time as both a participant and a collaborator. Through a partnership between our organisation, @HashtagGulu, @KasUganda, @qataharraymond and the @IMChallengeug, we organised and curated a space for a conversation reflecting on 20 years since the cessation of the LRA insurgency in northern Uganda. It was a timely and important conversation, especially considering how much Gulu has grown and transformed from the difficult years of the war to the city we know today. And, just like the previous year, the marathon gave us another opportunity to reconnect with friends, acquaintances, former schoolmates, childhood friends and many others. This year, I have decided to take my involvement a step further. I see the #GuluCityMarathon as more than just an annual sporting event. I see the opportunities it presents for a growing city like Gulu, the cause it stands for, the impact it is creating in our communities, and the vision behind it. For these reasons, I will not only participate but also collaborate more actively with the organisers through @fourthhub_ug, as part of our commitment to supporting meaningful community initiatives and causes that create lasting impact. To @FGimara and the entire Gulu City Marathon team, thank you for starting something that has the potential to outlive all of us. My colleagues at @fourthhub_ug and I are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this story and help shape what it could become. To my fellow Gulu City residents, this is our opportunity! We have an opportunity to position our city, showcase what we have to offer, and contribute to changing the narrative about Acholi and northern Uganda. Whether you choose to do business and make some money, welcome the thousands of visitors expected in Gulu in early December, volunteer, cheer on the runners and walkers along the different routes, or simply extend our famous Acholi hospitality, there is something for everyone. And to everyone coming from outside Gulu, we are ready to welcome you! If I were you, I would register now to secure my slot and running kit, and start making transport and accommodation arrangements early enough. After all, in Acholi, we say starting early is the medicine for rain. 😁 See you all on 5th December 2026! But first, register to participate. Then tell a friend, and even better, help them register too. If you can, consider sponsoring someone else to run or walk. You never know what that opportunity might mean to them.
