Woke people are like drug addicts. They’ll stop pressing you for a fix if you scream at them, but their mission keeps moving forward. They’re still looking for an angle. Classic mistake is to think, “Oh, man, that joke really struck a nerve,” and not, “Oh, man, that joke really presented these people with an opportunity to do the thing that gets them high.”

Being addicted to time travel honestly sucks so much just because of how hard it is to generate 1.21 gigawatts of power. Logistical nightmare.

Someone tell him there's a Time Traveler's Anonymous meeting at St. Matthew's United on March 4th, 1991.

Cemetery Gates is the one that really did it for me. The contrast of a gothic setting placed against such bright music full of movement is incredibly charming. I also loved that the song takes place in a sort of permanent present. Spending time with a friend and feeling that it’s special, but also that you will see them again, is a really sweet message. The line “but you lose” makes me laugh. Plus, just the blindly declarative statements (“If you must write prose and poems, the words you use should be your own”) are so novel. You don’t hear a lot of songs that start giving advice in the middle. I love the way the snare sounds. I love the bass fill that starts the song. I love the interplay of the guitar and bass throughout the whole thing. I love how dry the production is. It’s all just so earnest and vulnerable and therefore powerful.
out of curiosity what was THE song that really got everyone into the smiths? personally it was this charming man and shakespeare’s sister for me

You’re not allowed to talk like this. Only homophobic racists like me are allowed to talk like this.
Basquiat used to wait for his canvases to pass-out drunk, then he would draw on them.

People have noticed that Vivek does not have a grasp of the American sensibility. Your argument is that this noticing is racist, and therefore did not occur. But you haven’t substituted an explanation for why Vivek was so off the mark. Your argument is just that people should not come to conclusions that violate liberal orthodoxy. It’s just a roundabout way of saying “shut up.”

Nobody wants your friendly advice you quirky dork. You people keep saying, “maybe there’s an issue,” as though there is anybody left alive who hasn’t gotten the memo about how to think woke on every issue. We tried that and nothing improved, so now we’re not doing it anymore.

I think it's obvious that women are speaking about their shared experiences when saying "all men". Instead of immediately going on defense, it's way more productive to think if this many women are saying "all men" based on their experiences then maybe there's an issue on our end.

Crazy that there’s a human experience that’s shared only by Joseph Stalin and Michael Rapaport.
Unbelievable night in ISRAEL. I humbly received a RECORD-BREAKING 26-MINUTE STANDING OVATION in ISRAEL. What an honor. 26 MINUTES!!! I was sure it was gonna stop at 19:48, but it just kept going & going & going. I didn’t even know they timed these things, but WOW — 26 minutes! Apparently a film once got a 25-minute standing ovation in Venice, Italy, but NOW the record is held by the incredible ZIONIST JEWS OF ISRAEL!!! So #Humble #ChagSameach 🇮🇱

Trans people very clearly can create art. You can’t honestly talk about the history of electronic music without mentioning Wendy Carlos’ and Sophie.

Interpol sounds more like Joy Division than the 200 other famous bands that also sound like Joy Division. Bass lines that are the melodic centre of the song, baritone vocals, ambient drum tones, abstract, pseudo-gothic lyrics, it’s not like we’re talking quantum physics here. Also, don’t type “enjoy” twice and certainly don’t tell me to “just let people enjoy things.”

Interpol really doesn't sound that much like Joy Division. If anything, you can hear The Chameleons influence more. You can argue that The Killers are an Interpol rip off. So I really don't understand the point of this post. Just enjoy enjoy music.

Inspector Chan did a flip off of some scaffolding. A guy ran at Chan with a knife, but Chan expertly thwarted his attack by picking up an umbrella from in front of a shop and using it as a sword. Turning 180 degrees, the agile police inspector saw another thug charging at him, so he stuck his foot in a vase and flung it at his attacker with a sort of soccer kick. It struck the man in the face and sent him tumbling to the ground. After the vase shattered, Chan noticed a price tag on one of the shards. The tag denoted that the vase was of significant monetary value. Noticing this caused Chan to make a pained and exaggerated facial expression. This was very comical.
Cinema is not primarily intellectual, but visceral, experiential. It shines in depictions of action and performance, horror and time. No novel could capture the genius of Jackie Chan.

The death cult of vampire cannibals are arguing about if movies are Satan. This is why I keep Twitter.

Mr. Walsh's overall point here is correct, but it's worth noting that the only real characters in Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre are post-'68 Democratic Convention pseudo-Austinites and the members of the multi-generational family of cannibals who attempt to kill them in the rural American South. This rural vs urban, young vs old frame colors the experience of watching the film in a manner that should be obvious to even minimally discerning viewers. Whether the film is on the side of the youths can easily be debated, but the movie didn't make over $100 million because of the public's appetite for "torture porn." Interestingly, Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is the over-the-top, extremely violent, thematically shallow film that killjoy critics accused him of making the first time, and that one he made as an intentional comedy. Even he can't take the idea of "torture porn" seriously.
I'd actually argue that horror is the most Christian genre of film. Obviously that's not true of the torture porn stuff -- films in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre tradition -- but supernatural horror is often subtly Christian and sometimes very explicitly Christian. It's the only category of film where the supernatural, demons, spirits, exorcisms, the Church, etc, are consistently taken seriously. The only genre where the priest might actually be the good guy. Horror has deep roots in Christian thought and tradition.
