USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving.
Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free.
I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these."
"They just come with the table, man."
They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner.
This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat.
I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared.
"Did we…?"
"Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless."
Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined.
My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude."
Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man.
I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy.
Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived.
I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most.
Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.

Leaving for work this morning, I looked over and saw what was left behind in the cul-de-sac - a hockey net, scattered sticks, and the remnants of what had to be a 15-20 kid street hockey game last night.
And it hit me… I live at Topsail. A beach community in North Carolina. Yet these kids are choosing to play hockey in the street instead of the “traditional” Southern sports you’d expect around here.
That’s what the Carolina Hurricanes @Canes have done for this state. They didn’t just build a fanbase, they grew the game. It’s honestly amazing seeing hockey take root in places as random as a beach town cul-de-sac. 🏒🌴 Happy Gameday!!!

Who the fuck is this loser
Blatant goaltender interference that never got called on Saros, MacKinnon’s pathetic dive that drew the late power play, and the obvious offside they completely missed…
Two Canadian refs were running the game and handed Canada exactly the result they needed against Finland tonight.
This win is completely tainted.
Cheating accusations aren’t going anywhere.

After the incredible performances we’ve seen from our men’s and women’s hockey teams in Milan, all of Canada is cheering them on as they go for gold.
To help everyone get in the spirit of the games, I’ve directed the Minister of Education to make sure all Ontario students are able to watch the remaining Team Canada hockey games that take place during school hours, starting with tomorrow’s game.
Let’s all come together to cheer on Team Canada as they bring home Olympic gold!

This might be the single best piece I've read from the Olympics given the creativity and brilliance with words. It's on Julian Junca, the starting goalie for France. From Chris Jones:

Replying to @colewhogan @PierrePoilievre
@PierrePoilievre still grasping at trying to say Carney is the same as Trudeau.... who is going to tell him? They are vastly different. Carney could have run as a conservative and would have won by a landslide.

Prime Minister Carney’s remarks at Davos rose above the usual talking points. They were serious, disciplined, and unmistakably about Canada’s interests- not performative politics.
I’m a partisan conservative. I believe in sovereignty, security, the rule of law, fiscal discipline, and earning our place in the world rather than assuming it. I’m also not interested in reflexive cynicism. When a Prime Minister articulates Canada’s purpose clearly on the world stage, and does it in a way that strengthens our credibility with allies and puts adversaries on notice- that matters.
Do I agree with him on everything? No. I disagree, for example, with his framing on China given their closeness and open support to some of the world's worst actors.
But I agree with much of what he said at Davos, and more importantly, I respect the frank, clear-eyed assessment behind it. Canada needs leaders who can name hard realities without flinching, and speak plainly about what our allies expect and what our competitors will exploit.
This doesn’t mean a free pass at home. Accountability still applies. Debate still applies. Elections still apply.
But in moments like this, grown-up countries close ranks around the national interest. Every Canadian should be able to support that, regardless of party, because Canada is bigger than our politics.
We can build walls or we can be more ambitious — and build something better, stronger, and more just.

BUT LET US BE CLEAR-EYED ABOUT WHERE THIS LEADS. A WORLD OF FORTRESSES WILL BE POORER, MORE FRAGILE, AND LESS SUSTAINABLE.”

Elections are for later. Vote Conservative, vote Liberal - that choice will come. Put down your partisan swords today and take a moment and listen to this speech and what is being framed. These times are not like any other.
