When I snapped the photo, it looked like many meetings I covered before: neighbors packed into a San Francisco warehouse to oppose a large project.
The photo went extremely viral—becoming latest flashpoint in generational clash over housing. @sfchronicle

A testament to @mitchell_m22494 and @susieneilson's exceptional reporting on willful disfunction in Homerise's supportive housing system.
When I took office, we set out to completely transform the city’s work around homelessness, drugs, and behavioral health—bringing urgency and accountability to every part of the system.
San Franciscans should have confidence that public dollars are producing real results. So when a provider isn’t keeping residents safe or providing effective services, we need to make a change. Due to HomeRise's continued failures, the city is taking steps to transition four programs to new providers who can deliver.
When an organization gets taxpayer dollars to deliver services for San Franciscans, our administration is going to hold them accountable.
Thank you to Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing Executive Director Mike Levine and his team for leading this work with compassion and accountability for every resident in San Francisco.

Between 2019 and 2024, 12 of the 18 deaths tied to deficient care at for-profit psychiatric hospitals involved Signature facilities. One was Raymond, a depressed 15-year-old who died by suicide after staff failed to properly monitor him, according to state health inspectors.

INVESTIGATION: A depressed California teen died at an understaffed for-profit psychiatric hospital where he was left unmonitored. His death — and the state’s conclusion that it stemmed from deficient care — were not isolated occurrences.
