.@Lagarde resignation today obviously prompting lots of speculation about what role she may place in France's presidential election. Has been chatter in Paris for some time that she may join @EPhilippe_LH on a joint ticket as his PM-candidate to attract more centre right votes. But Le Monde says it’s to give Macron a voice in choosing her successor at the ECB rather than risk that decision being screwed up in some way by Le Pen. There is also a risk that all Lagarde would do is further split the anti-RN vote heading into R1. So, too early for quick takes. Let's see
I have just informed my colleagues that I will step down as @ECB President on 7 February 2027.
It has been a source of great pride to serve this institution.
I thank all of those who have supported me on this journey over the past seven years.

🚨 Harry Kane on Vincent Kompany following his hospitalisation:
“When Vin first arrived at Bayern, one of the things that surprised me was how much he wanted to know about what I was seeing on the pitch.
After training he’d call me over and ask, ‘Harry, when the centre-back follows you, what do you want the winger to do?’
I’d explain it, and he’d say, ‘Good. Now tell me what happens if the other centre-back doesn’t follow.’
Sometimes you’d answer one question and end up having a 20 minute conversation.
I remember once we finished a session and I told him, ‘Boss, I think we’ve covered everything.’
He said, ‘We haven’t played the game yet.’
That’s Vincent.
There was another day he stopped a finishing drill because he wasn’t happy with the pass before the shot. I told him, ‘But I scored.’
He said, ‘I know you scored, Harry. I’m trying to make sure you score when the defender does his job properly.’
And he was right. That’s the frustrating thing about him. You’d go home thinking about something he said and realise he had a point.
But the boys started noticing that he wasn’t switching off.
You’d arrive in the morning and he’d already watched clips from the previous session. You’d leave in the afternoon and he’d be asking about a young player training with the second team.
One day I asked him, ‘Do you actually have a day when you don’t watch football?’
He laughed and said, ‘I watch less on Sundays.’
I asked, ‘How much less?’
He said, ‘Depends who’s playing.’
When we heard what had happened at the training ground, football suddenly became the last thing any of us wanted to discuss.
I kept thinking about all those little conversations. The man who’d ask whether I’d made the right run, whether I’d noticed a defender’s shoulder position, whether we’d pressed five metres too late. And now all we wanted was to hear that he was okay.
Someone asked me what it felt like to win the Ballon d’or. It’s difficult to explain. Bayern hadn’t had a winner since Rummenigge in 1981. 45 years. And to be the player who brings that award back to this club is something I’ll carry with me forever.
But I also know whose fingerprints are on it.
Vincent never made me feel like I had to become a different striker. He made me notice things I hadn’t noticed before. He challenged me on days when I’d scored twice because he thought I could have helped the team more. And when I was frustrated, he’d sit down and explain exactly what he was trying to achieve.
That’s why I wish he could have been there for that moment.
I can imagine him watching the ceremony and thinking about our next opponent before I’d even finished my speech.
When he’s ready, I want to put the trophy in front of him and tell him, ‘Boss, this one belongs to you a little bit as well.’
And knowing Vincent, he’ll probably say, ‘Thank you, Harry. Now, about that chance you missed last weekend…’
But seriously, I hope he understands something.
He’s spent so long telling us that no individual is bigger than the team. Well, right now the team is telling him the same thing.
We can manage a few training sessions without him. We can watch the clips ourselves. We can even get a few things wrong.
What we can’t do is replace him.
So I don’t want him thinking about Bayern’s next match, or who needs to press higher, or whether I’ve made enough runs into the box.
I just want him to get well.
The football will still be here when he comes back.”

🚨 John Terry speaking on Alonso not giving Estevão a single minute against Liverpool:
"Seriously, I was fully expecting Estevão to start against Liverpool, or at the very least come on at some point. Instead, he didn’t get a single minute of action.
I really hope Alonso doesn’t have any issue with him, because if you ask me, I don’t want Estevão leaving this club. He’s a special talent, a real star in the making. Alonso shouldn’t push him to the side the boy needs time, trust, and minutes to develop.
Alonso has to find a way to give him proper game time and help him settle. Don’t waste a player of his quality."

🚨Joe Cole on chelsea’s lineup against Liverpool tonight
🎙️Reporter: Joe, what’s your honest reaction to Chelsea’s lineup against Liverpool tonight?
🗣️Cole: Honestly, when I look at this lineup, I feel like crying. I’m not even joking. I look at this team and wonder what exactly we are trying to achieve. This is Chelsea against Liverpool, one of the biggest games of the season, and there are decisions here that I simply cannot understand.
And my biggest question is, why can’t Xabi Alonso also give Estêvão a proper chance? What exactly does this boy have to do to earn more minutes? Every time he gets an opportunity, you can see the talent, the confidence and the willingness to take on defenders. He has constantly shown glimpses of what he can bring to this team, but somehow, he still seems to be fighting for an opportunity.
I honestly don’t understand it. You have a young player with so much potential, someone who can bring unpredictability and excitement to the attack, yet we keep wondering when he will finally get his chance.
I’m not saying Estêvão must start every single game, but at least give him a proper opportunity to show what he can do! You cannot expect a young player to develop, gain confidence and become a key player if he is constantly watching from the sidelines.
And against Liverpool, this is exactly the kind of game where you need players who can make something happen out of nothing. Estêvão has the ability to take on a defender, create chances and bring that spark when the team needs it most.
🎙️Reporter: So, do you believe Xabi Alonso is making a mistake with his team selection?
🗣️ Cole: I’m asking questions because I want Chelsea to succeed. We cannot keep signing exciting young talents and then leave them wondering what they need to do to get on the pitch. If Estêvão keeps showing his quality but still struggles to get opportunities, then naturally, people will start questioning the manager.
Chelsea fans want to see the best players given a chance to help the team. If Xabi Alonso believes in Estêvão’s potential, then at some point, he has to show that belief on the pitch, not just in words.
Because honestly, if this boy gets limited minutes again tonight, I can already imagine the reaction from Chelsea fans. We need answers. What more does Estêvão have to do to convince Xabi Alonso that he deserves a proper chance?
