The story that Urmila slept continuously for fourteen years is not found in Valmiki’s Ramayana, the authorized version. It is a later folk tradition. In the actual Ramayana, Lakshmana’s duty was to serve Lord Rama without any personal consideration. That is the ideal of a devotee. When one is engaged in the service of the Supreme Lord, all material attachments—wife, home, comfort, so-called “intimacy”—become secondary. That is the teaching. Lakshmana left everything to serve Rama. That is his glory. Sita also went because she insisted on following her husband, which is the duty of a chaste wife (pativrata). But the principle is the same: everything for the service of the Lord. Urmila’s position, whatever it may have been, was also to support that service, not to demand bodily comfort. That is an ideal wife. In Vedic culture, the wife’s real satisfaction is in helping her husband execute his dharma, especially when that dharma is service to God.
