Between January and April 2026, we documented a sharp escalation of arbitrary arrests, torture, and ill-treatment in Dekai, Yahukimo Regency, #WestPapua. Joint security forces – including the Indonesian Marine Corps (TNI-AL), the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force, the Habema Task Force, and the Yahukimo District Police – are alleged to have detained dozens of indigenous Papuans without warrant, among them students, activists, gold panners, women, and children as young as 14.
More than 30,000 hectares have burned in #WestPapua so far in 2026. Schools closed, indigenous communities losing forests and food sources, health centres struggling with a surge in respiratory patients. @walhinasional’s new study points to those who should be held accountable.

On 25 September 2026, a military operation in Danggomba Village, Intan Jaya, #WestPapua killed at least two civilians and left the fate of two others unknown. Only one of the four men was confirmed as a TPNPB member; his three brothers were civilians.
TNI and local accounts contradict each other. One brother was seen alive being taken by security forces to an unknown location. Another sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Their current whereabouts remain unconfirmed.
An independent investigation is urgently needed.

On 3 August 2026, Indonesian police blocked and dispersed peaceful KNPB demonstrations across Sentani, Jayapura Regency, held under the theme "Papua: a Military and Humanitarian Emergency Zone." The protests were part of simultaneous actions across #WestPapua and several Indonesian cities.
27 protesters were injured and two detained. Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, approximately 1,000 joint TNI-police personnel were deployed. Jayapura Police Chief had declared in advance that the demonstration would not be "permitted." Read more: humanrightsmonitor.org/case/…

An American pilot was killed, and a civilian mission aircraft was burned during an attack in Yahukimo Regency #WestPapua on 2 July 2026. The TPNPB claimed responsibility, alleging the aircraft was used to transport Indonesian military personnel and logistics, while PT Associated Mission Aviation (AMA) and the Catholic Diocese of Jayapura denied these allegations, stating the aircraft served humanitarian and civilian missions. Following the attack, AMA suspended flights in the Wamena-Dekai region, disrupting access to essential services for remote communities. We calls for an independent investigation and urges all parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure. Read more: humanrightsmonitor.org/gener…
