Congratulations to the @Amazon and @AnthropicAI teams.
Let’s read this announcement closely 👀
1) “up to” - it likely has milestones triggers that kick in based on things like cloud usage or product adoption
2) specific mentions of AWS chips (trainium, inferentia), two mentions of compute, and “alongside other providers” - this investment sounds like a big ML chip push to put Amazon in the top 2-3 of the Nvidia/Intel/Cerebras/Samba Nova/etc. battles, but does NOT look like it means Anthropic is standardizing on those chips.
3) specific mention of Amazon Bedrock - this investment is also a big push to put (or in my opinion, keep) AWS as the number one ML productionization platform.
4) “across Amazon’s businesses” - no mention of other specific Amazon products (Alexa, other AWS producers like CodeWhisperer, Ads, Studios, dot com, etc.). But sounds like Amazon’s internal LLM adoption will be Claude-driven and not Titan or other LLM providers. Will want to keep watching this and see what Google/Cohere does (expand partnership? Add salesforce into the mix?).
5) I’ve always appreciated the specificity and trust-reinforcing in Anthropic’s communication style, down to the Twitter/X bio. This is no exception. Props to whoever wrote this.
I launched the ML startups group at AWS in 2019 and was there for all the early Anthropic conversations (even when it had a different company name).
While I obviously can’t share specifics, just want to add a BIG congratulations to my old team. Can’t wait to see where this goes for advancing responsible and trust-building AI.
Today, we’re announcing that @Amazon will invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic. The agreement is part of a broader collaboration to develop reliable and high-performing foundation models.
