Egypt’s authorities are targeting Mada Masr solely for its fearless reporting, as part of a wider crackdown on the few remaining independent media outlets in the country. Under international human rights law, the closure of a media outlet for operating without the government’s authorization is an excessive and disproportionate sanction incompatible with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) - a treaty Egypt has ratified. Authorities must immediately drop the charges and grant Mada Masr the licence it has repeatedly requested since 2018.
