Whenever we talk about Africa's developmental dilemma, we often hear that the problem is weak institutions. But this raises an important question.... how do strong institutions come into being in the first place?
What is lost on most people is that the Western liberal democracies that we desperately admire and are attempting to emulate did not start as full democracies. They conveniently want us to forget that until a few decades ago many of them were ruled by monarchs. Their state capacity was built through earlier periods of consolidation brought about by royal/imperial decree.
This is not a trivial issue.
Indeed, Europe's states were hammered into shape over centuries through monarchies and empires that centralized authority, imposed common laws, built taxation systems, and forged national identities through violence and coercion.
The same is true for East Asia. Japan's Meiji Restoration in the late 1800s concentrated authority in the hands of the Emperor who drove rapid institutional and economic reform before mass democracy took hold. Even China, after decades of fragmentation and war, achieved territorial and administrative reconsolidation under a strong centralized state. In their case they are yet to be fully democratic so maybe I shouldn't even bring them up.
But we could add Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore to the list. Malaysia and Singapore both started as parliamentary democracies post independence but realised it didn't work so they both became single party de facto dictatorships.
Mahathir Mohamad built a strong Malaysian state apparatus, a development bureaucracy, industrial policy, and planning bodies that did outlast him. Lee Kuan Yew and his government built a state that didn't depend on Lee personally. He left office, and the machinery kept running - with a capable civil service, strong agencies, and statutory boards.
South Korea was authoritarian for decades and only made a democratic turn in 1987. Today they more more democratic and have strong institutions.
As you can see, historically, concentrated power has almost always preceded the creation of the very institutions that later make stable democracy possible.
Africa skipped this stage completely.
Colonial borders created African states that contain many peoples of varying ethnicities, with distinct languages, histories, and loyalties. Independence delivered the States, but not Nations in the deeper political sense. African countries are being expected to democratise, build national identity, extend state authority, build institutions, and deliver development all at once. This is like asking a baby to run a marathon before it can even crawl!
Family, clan, and tribe have thus unfortunately remained the most reliable institutions of trust in Africa. Why? Because when the state feels fragile, distant, or incompetent, people will naturally gravitate towards those age-old networks. And once you introduce electoral politics under these conditions, patronage and nepotism become survival strategies that inevitably undermine the building of impartial national institutions that are necessary for a functional democracy.
Why didn't Africa have its Lee Kuan Yew?
Post independence Africa DID produce its own would-be nationbuilders. Leaders who sought to break with colonial legacies, and wished to rapidly transform their countries. But many of these revolutionary projects were built around that single leader's vision. And when that leader fell, whether through death, overthrow, or exit, there was no institutional foundation to carry forward and sustain what little progress was achieved under his rule. Our countries thus fell into a repeating pattern... each presidential successor, convinced that his vision alone is what will redeem the state, dismantles what came before. So the country hits reset, again and again, repeatedly rebuilding the machinery of state instead of accumulating institutional momentum.

Take every instance of "Somalia" mentioned by this young man in the video and replace it with "Nigeria".

France began colonizing North America (The United States) in the 16th century and eventually controlled vast territories, including Louisiana, which it sold to the United States in 1803. Yet Pan-Africanists will tell you, with a straight face, that France is nothing without Africa. And then you wonder why people make those claims about sub-Saharan Africa's average IQ.

Without Africa, there’s no France. Without African resources and labor, there is no western civilization.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
France (and many other European nations) was one of the world’s strongest nations with developed and diverse culture long before the first colonies.

China doesn't buy finished goods from Africa; they buy raw materials.
They want raw chrome, manganese, and coal, which they process themselves and then sell back to Africa as finished products.
Replacing the US market with China means turning South Africa from an industrial hub back into a basic mining colony.
South Africa already runs a massive trade deficit with China. Shifting entirely to them doesn't "save" the economy; it completely surrenders it.
Imagine looking at a multi-billion dollar trade agreement that keeps South Africa's automotive, manufacturing, and agricultural sectors alive, and casually saying, "We'll just replace it with BRICS."
People love to swallow political propaganda. The absolute economic delusion is breathtaking.
The US trade deal allows South Africa to export high-value, manufactured goods, like fully assembled luxury cars, machinery, and processed citrus, completely duty-free.
This isn't just "trade"; it is the literal lifeblood of hundreds of thousands of high-paying industrial jobs.
You think China and Russia want to buy South Africa manufactured BMWs and Mercedes-Benzes? Absolutely not.
China doesn't buy finished goods from Africa; they buy raw materials. They want our raw chrome, manganese, and coal, which they process themselves and then sell back to us as finished products.

South Africa already runs a massive trade deficit with China. Shifting entirely to them doesn't "save" the economy; it completely surrenders it.
Furthermore, Russia's economy is heavily sanctioned and smaller than the state of Texas, they cannot consume our exports even if they wanted to.
It is easy for armchair politicians to play anti-Western ego games on social media, but ordinary workers in vehicle assembly plants and citrus farms cannot eat "BRICS solidarity."
Losing AGOA for political grandstanding isn't a strategic pivot, it's an economic suicide mission.

Europe told us diversity was our strength.. then Poland went the other way and left France and the UK in the dust.
This is Kraków, Poland in 2026. Packed, clean streets, families out at night, and nobody clutching their bags.
Poland told the EU NO on mass non-European migration and won an exemption from Brussels' relocation scheme. France and the UK opened the floodgates instead.
The UK had 48,774 knife crimes last year, about 134 every single DAY. France now ranks as the LEAST safe country in Europe on Numbeo. Kraków scores 75 for safety, while Paris sits at 42 and London at 44.
One country protected its people. The others imported their problems — be like Poland.

Without Washington, Ukraine would be a memory.
The entire narrative that Ukraine is standing solely on pure grit and defiance completely ignores the logistical backbone keeping them alive.
While the European Union dragged its feet, debated gas pipelines, and sent helmets, it was the United States that stepped up as the ultimate guarantor of Ukrainian survival.
From the vital intelligence sharing in the opening hours of the invasion to the relentless flow of HIMARS, Patriots, and financial lifelines, the U.S. has been the engine room of the entire resistance.
The media loves to paint president Trump as entirely anti-Ukraine, but the factual record tells a completely different story.
It was the Trump administration that broke the Obama-era taboo and authorized the first sales of lethal aid, specifically the Javelin anti-tank missiles, to Ukraine. When the Russian armor rolled toward Kyiv, it wasn't harsh words that stopped them; it was those very Javelins.
Zelensky can harbor whatever ambitions of absolute victory he wants, but the leverage belongs entirely to the payer, not the player.
If the U.S. decides to dial back the support or pivot its strategic priorities elsewhere, the frontline collapses.
To pretend Ukraine is a completely independent actor in this fight isn't just naive, it's a total denial of how modern geopolitical power operates.

Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi are fierce, ruthless competitors to the United States.
They want global dominance, but they are not economically illiterate.
China sits on over $1 trillion in US Treasury bonds and trades over $500 billion annually with America.
India's entire tech, service, and pharmaceutical boom relies heavily on the Western consumer market.
These men understand real economics. They will look Joe Biden or Donald Trump in the eye, play hardball on national interests, but they will never completely trash their economic relationship with the West over a reckless ideological tantrum.
They know exactly where their bread is buttered.
The BRICS backbone won't burn their bridge to the US, but Cyril Ramaphosa is playing a game so fundamentally dumb it defies logic.
While Beijing and New Delhi carefully balance their geopolitical chess pieces to protect their own citizens, Ramaphosa is out here grandstanding on the global stage, putting 576,000 South African jobs on the chopping block just for a diplomatic ego trip.
It is a masterclass in political stupidity.
You are risking a multi-billion dollar premium trade deal that keeps your automotive and agricultural sectors alive, expecting Russia, whose sanctioned economy is literally smaller than the single state of Texas, to pick up the slack.
Vladimir Putin cannot buy your luxury cars, Xi Jinping only wants your raw chrome and coal to fuel Chinese factories, and Narendra Modi is busy securing India's own trade priorities.
None of them are running a charity for struggling African economies.
When the dust settles and South African factories face massive layoffs, Beijing and Moscow aren't sending bailouts. They will watch from the sidelines while we suffer the consequences of elite political posturing.
Playing the global tough-guy with a collapsing economy, and 32% unemployment is an economic suicide mission.
Seriously what's even the point Hollywood anymore. By next year creators will be uploading high quality feature length movies for free daily. No need for studios to spend 100 million dollars to make a crappy liveaction adaptation of a popular novel, comic or manga and casting actors who look nothing like the characters they're supposed to be portraying. Now just tell AI to make the film.

Lol. They voted themselves into bankruptcy. Massive social welfare programs combined with mass immigration. What did they expect. Of course cost of living would skyrocket.
France has FREE health care, paid parental leave, paid family leave, FREE child care, FREE preschool, 5 weeks paid vacation, a 35 hour work week, generous unemployment and housing benefits, and heavily subsidized higher education.
Everything the left says they want AND THEY'RE STILL PROTESTING AND BURNING SHIT DOWN.
