Nike’s CEO once asked Steve Jobs for advice.
Steve told him, “Nike makes some of the best products in the world, but you also make a lot of crap. Just get rid of the crap.”
@RonnieFieg came to a similar realization while working at David Z, and decides to create Kith:
“I saw an opportunity in being passionate about 100% of the things I was doing, not about 10–15% of the things I was doing.”
My conversation with @RonnieFieg, founder, CEO and creative director of Kith.
At 13, Ronnie turned down an envelope of cash at his bar mitzvah and asked for a job instead. He started the next day in a sneaker stockroom and spent the next 15 years learning every part of the business before launching Kith in 2011.
Today, Kith puts out more than 5,000 styles a year across apparel, footwear, kids and accessories, and has lines outside its stores from New York to Seoul. It has no outside investors, doesn’t wholesale and doesn’t license. Until recently, Ronnie was still the fit model for the product.
Ronnie describes himself as a world builder, and this conversation is the best explanation I’ve heard of what that means.

Sport brands need more sport. Nothing else.
Excuse my spontaneous hot take after Alexandre Arnault joined Nike's board today.
Not going to talk about his skills, culture, qualities, or how amazing it would be to have him at that table or any table. Not even the subject. At least not the subject im interested to pick but the seat is. Nike, minus 40% in 2026, and and the newest director runs a wine and spirits house, from one of the oldest, already fading luxury pop culture houses.
Sport brands lost the north, and the north is sport.
This is not a Nike story. It is a board story, industry-wide, cultural. Culture should lead business. Instead business hires a profile and calls it money.
Boards need to open up to a new generation of experienced cultural individuals, and those will not come from the usual Harvard or Sciences Po, pipes...
Sport marketing is definitely the key.
Yet from HOKA to On Running to Salomon, brands keep hiring cool people who not really run instead of skilled sport-DNA people who happen to be cool, hype and contemporary. The castings are wrong. Everybody opens up, goes transversal across their own categories, and totally forgets the main duty. Sport.
This hot take is about things I have already said many times. This signal is not only wrong. It is devastating.
Dig deeper into LVMH culture: how can Nike take this path when LVMH holds pretty much all the best top-tier athletes, Nike's included, and has neither the vision nor the strategy to use and amplify them? What makes me sad right now is that most brands, from luxury to the giants, use sport marketing as a lock, a mercato block: sign the athlete so no other brand can do anything with him. Or they just do running clubs. I should have copyrighted that properly. Paris Running Club, 2008, with my New York captains, we were the only ones to have that vision and that energy...
Sport is becoming the pivotal node, the center, the symbol that elevates brands and business. And everyone prefers to be luxury or hype rather than using sport culture and the DNA of every athlete, federation and actor around it.
The old guardians and structures of sport are dying. Federations and big tournaments are losing it: they cash flow before they build, and nobody anticipates that the younger generation is slowly losing it too. Trail, mountains, the running category will not save you for long.
So enjoy. Keep doing money and hype rather than building the bridges where athletes, trainers and sport-culture people learn marketing and business.
The younger generation is not choosing luxury over sport. It is choosing neither. Your athletes could have told you. The younger generation is choosing neither luxury nor sport. Your athletes could have told you. Your sport marketing directors too. Nobody asks them. Those who do are too busy on the ground, one major a week, all around the world, while the room debates the meaning of a brand that already has one.
Good luck, Alex.

Too many people gone. This year. These past months. These past weeks.
Friends, colleagues, family. Some not yet 50. Some not yet 40. A strange feeling, and a deep sadness.
I don’t remember my parents burying this many people at our age. Maybe they did and never said. Maybe we just live louder.
It sharpens things. We are temporary.
This life is a jungle sold to us as a lounge. It cannot be one, by nature. So we optimise. Better mornings, better body, better feed. We polish the surface and call it living. Most of it is for the neighbours.
Then someone stops answering.
The WhatsApp thread freezes on their last message. For a few days, the surface cracks. The real shows through. Priorities line up on their own. We promise to live differently.
Then Monday comes.
Same rush. Same scroll. Same fake emergencies. Same smiles.
Grief interrupts us. It rarely edits us.
Miss you. I will try to remember. To let it sink in instead of passing through. To keep you past Monday.
