“...it does sound like Garmin [Connect] is annoyingly stripping out some data they consider proprietary..." Let's test that: gssns.io/posts/one-activity-…
After nearly 8 months being closed, Garmin revamps and re-opens their Connect API program. This new program now offers instant and free API for users to access their own data, plus new tiers for companies to access data. Here's everything you need to know: dcrainmaker.com/2026/10/garm…

A visual analogy for why small changes in NIRS probe position can return considerably different signals - chaotic scattering & absorption within tissue Mostly it averages out, but differential pathlength factor DPF is fundamentally unstable, while CW-NIRS assumes it's fixed 1/2

A good case study using real-world performance metrics to help detect & monitor flow limitations in the iliac artery in cyclists I hope profiling athlete-patients like this will help develop better predictive models

Time may be the most important recovery strategy of all ⏳ This new review and meta-analysis included 61 studies and 1,194 participants, comparing common post-exercise recovery methods across performance, biochemical and perceptual outcomes 🔍 Interventions included cold therapy, contrast therapy, heat, compression garments, blood-flow restriction, massage, active recovery and nutrition 🧊 Here are the key findings ⬇️ 📈 Across all modalities, performance generally returned to baseline within ~72–120 h 😌 Perceptual outcomes such as soreness and perceived recovery also generally returned to baseline within ~72–120 h 🩸 Biochemical markers recovered more slowly and had not clearly returned to baseline by 120 h ↔️ Crucially, no recovery modality consistently outperformed doing nothing for performance, perceptual or biochemical recovery ❄️ Cold-water immersion was the most frequently studied intervention, but its effects were inconsistent across studies and outcomes 🩳 Compression, massage, BFR, heat, contrast therapy and active recovery similarly showed occasional benefits in individual studies without a consistent overall advantage 🍽️ 11 studies investigated nutrition, but substantial differences between interventions meant these could not be included in the meta-analysis 🥤 Carbohydrate/protein manipulation generally did not clearly accelerate measured recovery, although carbohydrate remains important for glycogen restoration and protein for muscle repair 🧃 Beetroot juice reduced soreness in one study, while grape-seed extract reduced CK; ketone monoesters showed no clear benefit ⚠️ At least half of crossover studies and more than half of independent-group studies had some concerns or high overall risk of bias 🧩 Individual studies sometimes showed meaningful effects, but pooled evidence suggests these benefits are not sufficiently consistent to identify a universally superior recovery method For athletes, recovery tools can still be selected around preference, practicality, cost and context, but the strongest overall message is that adequate time between demanding sessions appears to matter more than any specific recovery modality ✅ Reference: sportrxiv.org/index.php/serv… Subscribe to performancenutritiondigest.c… FREE to receive your daily study breakdown, straight to your inbox or via the Substack app 📥 Powered by healthspanelite.co.uk⚡️

Garmin has bought Moxy Monitor, entering a category that has already seen BSX Insight and Humon Hex close. SmO2 cannot be read at the wrist, so the deal points to dedicated Garmin hardware. the5krunner explains the category. #garmin #cycling

In our new EJAP paper with @MartinMacInnis, we found that the respiratory compensation point (RCP) agrees well with critical power (CP) if individual VO2 kinetics are accounted for (and poorly if ignored), but the CP model chosen also affects the agreement.

Can you suggest a paper reporting an increase in fractional utilization of VO2max (FU) at thresholds, without an increase in VO2max - or a remarkable higher increase in FU compared to VO2max? Thanks

Dose-response model of training volume on VO2max: Saturate HIIT volume - it might be lower than we think - fill time-availability and adaptation-capacity with MICT, according to personal enjoyment and goal demands But this just shows where the research has been done so far
Proud to announce the publication of our dose-response meta-analysis in Sports Medicine: Optimising Exercise Prescription: A Meta-Analysis Examining the Dose Response of Exercise Duration on Cardiorespiratory Fitness Following HIIT and MICT. This is a combination of HIIT "VO2max" & sprint "all-out" intervals, so pure HIIT minutes might be a bit higher And untrained population, so trained might be able to saturate a bit higher But maybe not the 5x5min 3/wk our egos think we can handle sustainably 😅

All Exercise thresholds identify: ✅Physiological/metabolic responses ❌Sustainable durations. CP, FTP, lactate thresholds, ventilatory thresholds, etc. are not inherently linked to a specific duration like 30 minutes or 1 hour. Thresholds ≠ sustainable duration
