One of my favorite research practices I learned at @inkandswitch is “preinfusion”. The term comes from espresso (I believe @pvh coined it?) - and the original meaning is that you have a lower pressure soak before you turn on the high pressure and pull the shot.
The way it works at the lab is that you patiently let a cluster of ideas slowly form and develop, meandering somewhat in the background, and you lay the groundwork to work on them more seriously… before starting an intense high-pressure sprint. Could be a few months of part-time preinfusion before a hardcore 3 month project.
This really helps avoid the problem where you’re trying to sprint, but you don’t actually have enough clarity to know where to run.
I think this applies in many other contexts. Preinfuse before trying to write an essay. Preinfuse before raising money for a company. A slow and patient preparation can enable swift follow through.

💜⚔️ Still thinking about why this @valkyries championship means so much to me. In theory, expansion teams are supposed to spend years losing.
Instead:
- Zero #1 picks and zero All-@WNBA selections on the roster, no one was another team's first choice. Veronica Burton was literally practicing in a @YMCA, thinking she might never get the chance to play again.
- Coached by 5'2" Natalie Nakase, a walk-on to the @UCLA team (!!), whose playing career was cut short by injury. She literally worked her way up from being a *video coordinator* for the @LAClippers, and is also the first Asian American head coach in WNBA history.
- First game 7 in @WNBA history, with an absolutely absurd second half (go Gabby!!!!). Gabby Williams is also vegan, which (if anything!) seems to help rather than hurt her gameplay.
- Fastest team in major sports history to win a title (year 2!!)
Proof that grit, culture, and a room full of underdogs who believe in each other and who care about each other beats pedigree every single time. So, so inspiring.
Really hoping someone is already working on the book or @Netflix @PrimeVideo documentary; day-one pre-order from me! 📚
rstickr.dev is live whenever it is Sunday for you. How many #RStats package and function names can you find?

Some big personal news: I'm moving to join Works in Progress as executive editor, starting next month. I have been hoping for an opportunity to work with @bswud and @s8mb for more than a decade, and I'm incredibly excited to finally have one.
WIP is expanding on every front right now. We'll soon begin coverage of business and finance, as well as putting out more reported features. To that end, we'll be hiring more writers and reporters in the year to come. I'm planning to remain based in the US to help build out our presence here.
The print edition of WIP has existed for less than 12 months, but sometime in the next week or so we will reach our 10,000th paying print subscriber. It's a group that now includes people who've been at the highest echelons of government and who run the world's biggest public companies. We’re already on track to 3x that number next year. We'll be in store at Barnes & Noble, Hudson News and independent newsagents next week too.
I think WIP is providing something that people are craving from physical media right now: fewer, extremely well-crafted pieces in a beautifully designed form. Issues now feature an amazing group of columnists, including Tyler Cowen, Dan Wang and Stephen Kotkin. Each edition is better than the last.
You'll see us in more and more places next year too. In January, our new weekly documentary films will launch on YouTube. We're expanding into the events space, with a new series in North America. The sky is the limit from here on out.

documenting and sharing is so important right now
💯 Co-sign.
For those of us who are mid- or late-career engineers and managers, the mandate shifted quite a while ago. We have decades of context on system design, software failures, architectural "taste", how to handle failures in distributed systems...
...but if you aren't modeling curiosity and pushing your teams and colleagues to build with AI - as well as sharing what you've discovered, attempting to inspire folks to experiment and to learn more - you're doing them a massive disservice.
I can't remember the last time I tweeted about a Google product update. I bet they never planned on it being this one. Will be such a QOL improvement

We are making Markdown files work natively across Google Drive and Docs.
You can now preview .md files in Drive, open them in Docs, edit them, comment on them, and collaborate without converting the file into a Google Doc!
And I have nested subdirectories each with their own CLAUDE.md so depending on where in the tree I am working the model has a different system prompt.
claude opus 5.5 on medium has been really fast and plenty intelligent for me. I grimace when I have to watch someone use sonnet 5 xhigh and it just spins and spins. is opus 5.5 medium cheaper than sonnet 5 xhigh?
ah found it here.
opus 5.5 medium = $1.34
sonnet 5 xhigh = $2.87

I created a new large language model called Bev. You give Bev a list of dinner options and it returns equal probability for all. It then asks you which you prefer, and when you pick one it then discloses a preference for another one.
Was great seeing so many peeps from federal agencies and state and local governments at #positconf2026. Open source data science is stronger than ever in #government. I’m always happy to chat if you want to talk more. #RStats #PyData #positconf
