One of New Zealand's greatest architects has died. Farewell and thank you, Sir Miles Warren (10 May 1929 - 9 August 2022).
Such a pleasure to work in a team with Miles to campaign to keep the Christchurch Town Hall after the earthquakes.

This week the planet broke records for its hottest days in recorded history. Scientists are frightened and
begging us to act. Did you see this? Was it on front pages? No. And that’s why Just Stop Oil protest - because we are in deep, deep trouble and have our heads in the sand

Also arch firms aren't founded around great male figures like they used to be. So the names don't spread as far. You can see some of the great new arch in our great new book tho! freerangepress.nz/shop/p/shi…

“[Bub Bridger] said poetry didn’t have to be a florid Chaucer type thing. It’s really just drawing with words the things you’re seeing and experiencing — and trying to paint them for someone else to see.” Great interview with Bic Runga.

“In the face of mass apathy about the impending climate crisis, a flow of magical thinking has seemed to congeal around the speciously desperate idea that somehow the forests can save us.”
Essays in the new book “Touch Wood” (@LarsMullerBooks) recognize the need for a shift in how we think about trees—and inadvertently show why it has yet to happen, writes @edwinheathcote. #sustainability #architecture

Love a street section that includes tree roots.
Attention Street Design Nerds! One of the most intriguing cities in recent years at reconsidering streets for people instead of just for cars, Oslo Norway, has translated their Street Design Manual into English and put it on-line. Worth digging into. #Oslo

Just so we're clear:
1⃣ The oil, gas, coal and meat industries are proceeding full tilt with their plan of making our planet unliveable for billions, pushing our climate out of the "human niche" where we can simply exist. Our governments are complicit.

1/5 We need your help to keep an eye out for a new-to-New Zealand clam species recently discovered in the Waikato River at Bob’s Landing near Lake Karāpiro.
The freshwater gold clam (also known as the Asian clam) is native to eastern Asia.

Speed: NOT if wheels are rubber or metal; it's if it has dedicated lanes. See Jakarta's.
Bus Rapid Transit, BRT costs a fraction of a subway, which means with same $$ you can do 10 times more kilometers. Capacity & speed: similar to 60% world's subways and all LRTs. #Flexibility

Where is the NZ research on this?
In Australia, improving the performance of nearly 11 million existing homes makes a bigger difference to housing energy costs + emissions than a 7-star energy standard for new homes.
