Where are the wise diverse identities who are contributing to education?
Similarly, the wisest people I know in education- like @DTWillingham @New_Old_Paul @dylanwiliam @Rokewood- both wear their learning lightly, and can convey complex ideas in clear, accessible language.

If our goal is truly to prepare students for a diverse world an “adequate education” does not isolate one faith or tradition. A 'non-confessional' mandate is nearly impossible without bias & risks sliding into state-sponsored religious endorsement alienating non-Christian Stu

“A single, vivid, emotionally salient incident involving one new teacher becomes the evidentiary basis for sweeping claims about the entire education system. Easily recalled examples feel statistically representative even when they are isolated.
My daughter came home from school today and immediately asked if it is rude to correct a new teacher if the information she is teaching the class is wrong.
I told her it’s important that the students have the CORRECT information and that all teachers should have enough content knowledge to teach their subject and the curriculum expectations.
This new teacher was unsure of the differences between symbiotic and asymbiotic relationships (a little knowledge of morphology would have helped prevent that confusion!)
Since the class has a test next week, my daughter felt it was important for the class have the correct information. So she clarified the definitions for the teacher who had the definitions reversed.
My point is, our education system has NOT prioritized content knowledge for so many years- instead focusing on skills alone- that we now have teachers going into the teaching profession without the knowledge they need to teach the content!! This is exactly when teachers start to rely on an “inquiry-based approach” because it’s easier to ask students to figure it out themselves than to teach what they don’t know.
Direct instruction is key to learning- but for direct instruction to be effective, we also need knowledgeable teachers!! @KnowledgeMatrs @natwexler @nsachdeva2019 @New_Old_Paul

With respect, this film categorically is not about "how evil schools are".
It's about broken systems and infrastructures. It's about suffering.
It's about the cost of presenteeism and high stakes accountability.
It's about the brutal reality of families' struggles.

When you say 'evolve', what is the agency of this evolution? Who does the evolving?
1/ I wonder what the issue is with giving CYP a voice. Greg’s claims here are weak relying on silence & a false premise - because "nobody has yet challenged” the point, so claims it must be "generally accepted." A lack of pushback does not mean validation. People often…
ignore points they view irrelevant, combative, & factually weak rather than validate them with a response. By framing Voice 21, a highly successful program to over 1,100 schools as being "a failed progressive school experiment" is reductive & simplistic 2/

Go back far enough, and all terms are made up. Including the terms “made up” and “go back far enough”.

The 'made-up' term 'oracy' is like the 'made-up' term 'numeracy' (Ist used 1959 to parallel 'literacy'). The most common definition is 'Learning to Talk, Learning Through Talk & Learning About Talk'. All 3 aspects have been around for a long time & have substantial research 1/

Winter just compounds pressure, unsafety and pain in Gaza. Pls remember to keep sharing, donating and amplifying them. With the cold, often wet weather brings new struggles so shelter building is essential. Pls amplify and if you have the means, donate.

Know what I think the "ugliest" thing is? The flippant lack of compassion and empathy on display here from Stephen Fry. This is pretty atrocious.

Looking forward to getting stuck into this! Even doing my usual chapter scan while making lunch, I can see this is going to be invaluable for SEND families fighting the system - whether that's exclusions, punishments, EHCP delays, poor service from LAs just for starters 💪💪💪

It is shameful that the world failed to prevent genocide, failed to shelter Gaza's civilians from Israel's bombs, and is now failing even to lift the blockade on basic supplies that would protect children and their families as rain floods the camps of displaced people across Gaza.

Seems like a very well-informed and balanced piece to me. I’m bored and tired of the very reductive Trad/ Prog binary and like many English teachers, I expect, employ a wide range of teaching methods, valuing knowledge, skills, oracy, creativity, team work, critical thinking…
I've written a new blog replying to @daisychristo's latest substack piece, agreeing with her on just one thing but strongly taking issue with her overall stance and many of her other arguments about the new ideas being introduced by Labour & @LucyMPowell. englishandmedia.co.uk/blog/s…

Although it's dispiriting to see some education commentators desperate to continue their binary, partisan, all or nothing, fixed 'battleground' stances on education & any reform, it's also very heartwarming to find new areas of agreement & common ground with others. 🙏 to them!
