Sorry to side with our coming overlords, but “AI Soviet Afrofuturism” is fantastic!! Cc @economeager @ATabarrok
Today I asked the AI to interpret the phrase "Soviet Afrofuturism" and this is what it spat out

Wrote up a new piece on a pattern I've called "programming portals" – small, scoped windows in graphical interfaces that let you drop into programmatic syntax. Common in apps for end-user programming. Blurs the boundary between dynamic visuals + syntax maggieappleton.com/programmi…

We asked Ravens players to guess if a lyric was from Edgar Allan Poe or a rapper...🎶🔥 Harder than you'd think 🤔

Probably quite unpopular opinion, but after two-plus years of far-below-capacity operations and the two-pronged demand shock of everyone catching up on travel and the 9-Euro ticket, the very fact that German railway is still functioning at all is an operational marvel.
Heute seit langem mal wieder mit der @DB_Bahn unterwegs. Das Chaos ist unbeschreiblich … dieses Land ist dysfunktional … in vielen Bereichen agieren (nicht selten maskentragende) Dilettanten

the roger ebert "what is this thing trying to accomplish and how well does it pull that off" metric of critical eval is such an effective and healthy rule to follow while consuming works and genres and styles outside of your wheelhouse

This is super cool: @lunixbochs‘ #talonVoice talonvoice.com/ and @NuanceInc‘s #dragon supporting devs like @jessbudd4 be efficient and code without pain. #a11y #accessibility #speechRecognition #speechControl #RSI #keyboardLess #accessibleDev
‘What if I could talk to my computer instead?’ — This software engineer developed a way to code by voice after dealing with chronic injury
What I had to say about AI in 2018, and pretty much what I say today.

FWIW I thought this was a great thread re the “is AI becoming sentient” debate, TL;DR being that it’s an interesting question but it’s dramatically less important or urgent than the actually existing issues around ethical/responsible use of AI right now – at Brooklyn, NY
I will no longer engage in philosophical discussions about conscious AI/superintelligent machines, and here's why. (long🧵1/11)

Replying to @ShlomoArgamon
The Turing test is a bad test for sentience/intelligence/etc in part because humans want to be fooled. We're eager to see mind like ours everywhere, even where they are obviously* absent (e.g. anthropomorphizing weather, cars, plants). *unless you're an adherent of panpsychism

“The modal user may be well supported by paving the desire path indicated by their behavior, but what good is a paved path leading to stairs for a wheelchair user?” Wonderful take on the often lauded ‘desire paths’ and designing for long-tail user needs
In order to meet long-tail user needs in a market context, designers must move beyond user-centered design and instead design for emergence. rhizomerd.substack.com/p/whe…

Much like the Ming to Qing transition, the Soviet to post-Soviet transition was the Golden Age of culture. Censorship was over, while much of Perestroika optimism was still alive. Today I'm gonna show you a couple of iconic cartoons that you absolutely must be aware of

The more I research, the more I realise cultural innovation. Militarism does not necessarily lead to female cloistering, even in the exact same geography and system of kinship. During the Han & Six Dynasties (220-589), 🇨🇳 women warriors were admired for their bravery & virtue!

I know it comes from a place of caring, but please don't censor trigger words on here. Ex: say the word "ravioli" was triggering to me. I would likely have it muted. So when someone types "ravioli", I don't see it. But if someone types "rav*oli", I see the entire tweet.

We need to cut global greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 if we want to limit global warming to 1.5°C. 2030 sounds like sometime in the future? Well, as of today, these are all the weeks we have left.

This is incredible: Somebody took an existing score by Helmut Lachenmann, and made it the background for a platformer game. As you play through the "level," you create your own rendition of the piece.
