Worse off than what? Not worse off fiscally: the PBO is clear that most households and all below the top quintile get back more in rebates than they pay in tax. Which is all that was ever promised. So unlike most taxes, this tax is fully rebated, and then some. But, like all taxes, it still has an economic impact, and in that sense makes people “worse off.” So: worse off than what? Worse off than if we did nothing on climate change? That option isn’t on the table — but in any case you’d have to look at the costs of climate change, at least so far as our failure to do anything affects it. Worse off than other ways of cutting emissions? But that is demonstrably not true. Other methods are much costlier, and don’t come with a rebate. It’s just that the PBO didn’t bother to include those, which makes this study fairly pointless.
Corrected PBO report finds carbon tax leaves most Canadians worse off even as they get more back in rebates nationalpost.com/news/canada…

We at MacDivest wanted to congratulate @McMasterU on the well-deserved endorsement from green revolutionary Doug Ford, known for opening up thousands of acres of the green belt to development for highly affordable million dollar suburban homes!

THREAD 1/3: McMaster claims it cannot accept our demands because this would "set a precedent" for future hunger strikes This is absurd. First, It is INCREDIBLY difficult to organize and hold a hunger strike.

What do east-coast hurricanes and the price of ice cream have in common? If you guessed that both are increasing because of the climate crisis, you're correct.

As the world's third largest oil exporter, 🇨🇦 must address its contribution to the climate emergency. Above Ground has written to trade minister @mary_ng urging her to place #climatejustice at the heart of her annual priorities issued to @ExportDevCanada: aboveground.ngo/wp-content/u…
Join me in a few simple questions: Who has money in Cayman accounts? What are their political and economic interests? How are those interests served by the protests? Do you think any leaders of the federal Conservative party have asked themselves these questions?
Nice to see the working class truckers in Caymen Islands were so generous — had the highest average donation amount!

Issued yesterday by former heads of nuclear power and radiation safety: nuclear is not a solution to climate change; "The central message, repeated again and again, that a new generation of nuclear will be clean, safe, smart and cheap, is fiction." nuclearconsult.com/wp/wp-con…

This is interesting/exciting: Laurentian Bank becomes the first (but won't be the last) Canadian bank to commit to not directly finance the exploration, production or development of coal, oil or gas lbcfg.ca/press-room/?pr_arti… #fossilbanks @laurentian_b
Well that’s new. A certain Deputy Mayor has made a lot of different arguments in favour of cutting down trees. Today he had a novel reason. The tree in question should be removed so someone could install a pool “and given the pandemic we need more pools”.

If it’s so certain JFK was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald alone, why has the release of the assassination papers been delayed again? And why does the @washingtonpost insist asking this question is essentially the same as climate denial? Brian Baccus ponders: whowhatwhy.org/politics/gove…

I am devastated that Council failed to pass the Climate Emergency Parking Plan to reduce GHGs + raise $ for more #vancouver #ClimateEmergency actions. Every Gov’t must take every climate action in its jurisdiction as quickly as it can. That’s what scientists implore us to do.
We're extremely disappointed by @kennedystewart's vote against the Climate Emergency Parking Plan tonight It was a crucial part of the Climate Emergency Action Plan Thank you to @christineeboyle @AdrianeCarr @PtFry @councillorwiebe @JeanSwanson_ for being climate leaders

Politicians have forgotten how to feel. They are numb. We are NOT. 75% of youth feel frightened by the future and 45% feel #climateanxiety affects their daily lives. This is the cost of government inaction. @BorisJohnson @JoeBiden: Will you up your game at #UNGA? #WeFeelThisToo
