A recipe for failure. The "lessons learned from Gaza" are that these tactics don't work. 3 yrs on, w/so much destruction, Hamas is still in power, Israel is isolated & Israelis don't feel secure. Replicating this in WB is an explosive recipe for endless war. Lives on the line.
After two IDF soldiers were killed in an attack on Friday and three wounded, a policy shift in the West Bank. Israel's new doctrine appears to be not to wait in the West Bank after an attack and demolish part of a home as part of the historic home demolitions policy, which would take months to prep and be precise (sometimes one apartment in a building)...but it is now more rapid, "The Civil Administration and the IDF demolished illegal buildings and infrastructure in the past day near the scene of yesterday's terror attack in Hebron - drone footage: before and after." The policy is a hybrid learned from Gaza and Lebanon and previous ops in former refugee camps in urban areas in the West Bank. CNN noted; "Israel begins demolitions in West Bank city after two soldiers killed in shooting attack...Israel began demolishing buildings and forcing residents to evacuate a neighborhood in the occupied West Bank on Friday, hours after two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on an Israeli military checkpoint, killing two soldiers." The report notes that Israel's PM "also said the military would forcefully evacuate the area of the attack and 'transform it completely,' employing the plan used in the Jenin, Tulkarm, Nur Shams, and Al-Far’a refugee camps in early 2025, which led to the displacement of thousands of Palestinians and the evacuation of entire neighborhoods." “That is exactly what we will do here, in a neighborhood in Hebron from which the terrorists came. We will evacuate the residents, go house to house, remove weapons found there, and address and destroy all terrorist infrastructure," Israel's PM said. The PA appears to say that some 2,500 may be affected, and hundreds of families already evacuated. Israeli officials hint at a mult-day operation and a big surprise for the PA; after the attack on Friday a number of local politicians called for dismantling the PA. There have been threats in the past by several ministers to go after the PA and also urging "a West Bank military campaign similar to Gaza." It's unclear if this is testing the waters of that concept. The lesson's learned from the Gaza policy had already been applied in a limited way in a few places and the international community largely accepted this. For instance the UN said in December 2025 "satellite imagery shows that nearly half of all buildings in the [Nur Shams] camp, 48 per cent, had already been damaged or destroyed before this latest order." The UN claimed some 30,000 people had been displaced in various areas of the northern West Bank at the time. Despite the recent attack on October 23, attacks in the West Bank had actually been at their lowest level in years, after many operations by the IDF.

The cameras aren’t the point. They help protect Palestinians from settler violence and document abuses. The real issue is a system in which the Netanyahu government has willingly failed to uphold accountability for settlers and soldiers in the West Bank, leaving Palestinians vulnerable. That’s what deserves our attention and outrage. jewishinsider.com/2026/10/we…

Now explain the arrest of Israel’s former deputy attorney general for taking part in the same peaceful olive harvest.
This was not about harvesting olives. It was about harvesting headlines. Brad Lander’s latest stunt is nothing more than a calculated political provocation. Lander traveled to a foreign country, deliberately entered a restricted security area, and participated in an unauthorized activity without the required coordination. What makes this stunt even more outrageous is that his own team contacted Israeli representatives in the United States ahead of his visit and was explicitly informed that proper coordination with the relevant authorities was required. He chose to ignore those instructions. At a time of heightened security tensions, Israeli security forces have a responsibility to protect lives, prevent dangerous incidents, and maintain public order. Had anyone been injured as a result of his reckless political theater, Lander would undoubtedly have been among the first to demand that Israeli authorities intervene and provide protection. Brad Lander came looking for a confrontation. Now he is pretending to be its victim.

Israelis buying property in other countries is not apartheid. Words have meaning, and we have a responsibility to use them wisely. Francesca Albanese’s now-deleted post grossly feeds the kind of collective blame that can spill over into hostility towards Jews. The UN does important work. It deserves representatives who strengthen its credibility, not undermine it.

IMO, this report is a prime example of what we do best at FGS. It should be required reading for leaders of any organization.

Last week, I was invited into the homes of Jewish New Yorkers across the city to celebrate the holiday of Sukkot. It was a pleasure to be welcomed into these sukkot, in a beautiful tradition rooted in gratitude, gathering, humility and community.

Yehonatan Ovadia – a Hasidic Jew and Israeli citizen who has lived in the U.S. on a visa since 2022 – is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (a notorious federal prison) and facing deportation … for his criticism of Israel on religious grounds. To those who have supported the Trump Administration’s weaponizing of allegations of antisemitism: Do you see how preposterous this is? Nothing here is making Jews safer, it’s just using immigration enforcement to punish people for their political views. And if you’re opposed to Ovadia’s deportation – as I hope you are – but you haven’t spoken out against Mahmoud Khalil’s or Mohsen Mahdawi’s: it’s not too late to do so. You really don’t have to agree with people to agree on this: they shouldn’t be imprisoned or deported for their political views, or for their religion. nytimes.com/2026/09/30/nyreg…

We wrote one of the definitions of antisemitism listed in @NYCMayor's Strategy to Combat Antisemitism. We're glad our definition (or any definition, for that matter) is not being codified into law. This piece sums up why. forward.com/opinion/852941/n…

President Biden's National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism was widely praised for tackling hate on multiple fronts & it's encouraging to see the Mayor's team adapt that model into this plan to address the needs of Jewish New Yorkers. This is a strong step in the right direction.

NEW: For years, J Street argued that there had to be room in American Jewish life for a different kind of voice on Israel, one that can both support the country and be unafraid to criticize its leaders. Now, some of the people who helped shape the Jewish establishment are helping build that space with us. We’re honored to welcome them into our Jewish Community Advisory Council – and grateful to @JTAnews for telling the story of a changing American Jewish community.
