In 2009, Ian Wright went into Portland Young Offenders Institution to film Football Behind Bars, and one of the lads he met there was Adrian Clifton. Clifton had been at Arsenal between the ages of 11 and 15, dreaming of making it. Less than a year after the club let him go, he was locked up, and by the time Wright arrived he was on his third sentence. He'd grown up without the older male figure he felt he needed. Now one of his childhood heroes was standing in front of him inside a young offenders institution, watching him play. “You said, ‘I reckon you can do a bit when you come out.’” Clifton couldn't take it in. “Ian Wright thinks I’m good at football!” Yet the moment that stuck was tiny. As Clifton walked off, Wright put a hand on his back. “That pat on the back was mad for me!” “That was mad!” That was all it took for him to believe someone thought he was worth something. When the programme finished, Clifton got up at the graduation ceremony, his mum in the audience, and talked about what it had done for him. “This experience has possessed me with the self-confidence and belief that I can break my offending behaviour.” “There’s no doubt in my mind that if this is rolled out across the country, it will change lives.” Released at 20, he was set up by Wright and the programme to train with Wycombe Wanderers and live close by. No contract came of it, but getting away from the people and places tied to his old life made the difference. He took a warehouse job stacking boxes and started playing non-league. “From there I never looked back.” He climbed through the non-league ranks, became a Montserrat international and ended up at Boreham Wood. Thirteen years after Portland, he was in the middle of an FA Cup run. In January 2022, Boreham Wood faced League One side AFC Wimbledon in the third round. Clifton came on with four minutes left and scored almost straight away to make it 2-0, sending the club into the fourth round for the first time ever. Next up was a trip to Championship side Bournemouth. Boreham Wood won 1-0, and a fifth-round tie with Everton at Goodison Park was waiting. ITV then put Clifton and Wright back in the same room. “It’s a far cry from where we met.” “Thirteen years on!” Wright just looked at him. “Unbelievable.” For Wright, mentoring Clifton was never about endless speeches. “The thing with being a mentor is being there for people.” “The main thing is being here. Showing love.” Interviewed on ITV after the Bournemouth win, Clifton could barely get the words out. “There’s hope, there is hope.” “When someone like Ian comes into the life of a young man like myself and shows belief, you can see how far it can go.” The cup run wasn't really the success story for him. Simply being there was. “I’m holding back the tears massively.” “But two words, thank you.” In the ITV studio, Roy Keane had taken it all in sitting next to Wright, and leaned over to pat him on the knee. “Brilliant, very powerful.” “Great story, well done, Wrighty.” “You gave him a bit of hope.” “Brilliant stuff. Belgian authorities were present and appeared to watch as the boat departed. I’ve spent months documenting crossings from France, but this is the first time I’ve captured a launch from Belgium. As far as I’m aware, this could be the first time such a launch has been caught on camera. I’m sharing the full footage so people can see exactly what happened and draw their own conclusions.
