I have many friends whose skin color is different than mine. I have many friends who worship differently than I do. I have friends who vote differently than I do. I have friends who love differently than I do. I even have friends who hate my beloved Dallas Cowboys. We don’t have to agree on everything, but we have to agree on this, hate kills. #StopSuicide

I can’t speak for all men, but I can tell you this. If I were to ever confide in you that I was struggling mentally or emotionally, or that I felt afraid or vulnerable, regardless whether or not you believe my pain is real, or that my feelings were justified, if you minimized my feelings, or ridiculed me, or made me feel small, or embarrassed for talking about it, I would never open up to you again. Men need “safe” space, not “brave” space. Besides, unless you’ve walked in my shoes, you couldn’t possibly know my pain. #StopSuicide

Anyone who knows me well, knows that my passion is suicide prevention. I have dedicated my career to working with organizations, communities, and individuals to end stigma and normalize the conversation regarding suicide prevention. Suicide is not only a problem in the US. Around the world, we lose someone to suicide every 40 seconds. And believe it or not, there are many countries where even expressing suicidal intent is a criminal offense. I applaud organizations like East African Mental Health Network, @EACMentalHealth, a collaboration of 8 East African countries working to decriminalize suicide and de-stigmatize suicide prevention. I had the opportunity to chat with them while representing @afspnational at the 6th International Zero Suicide Summit. The more we support, encourage, and collaborate with organizations like EACMHN, the better chance we have of eliminating suicide globally. #StopSuicide #ZeroSuicideSummit #SuicidePrevention @zerosuicide_org @kalama_onesmus

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers reportedly had a text thread competing to pull over the most Black drivers, while using racial slurs in discussions about force against Black residents. More than half a dozen officers have reportedly been recommended for termination or quit.
A badge should NEVER be a license for discrimination! These allegations call into question traffic stops and use-of-force incidents involving these officers!

Severe depression and battling suicidal thoughts can make you feel weak, helpless, and hopeless but it takes strength and courage to choose life when your mind tells you life is too painful, and death is the only alternative. You are stronger than your thoughts. Live. #StopSuicide
This is absolutely true. As I always say, grief is a personal process.
Your healing journey is as unique as your relationship with the one you lost. Grief isn’t linear, and everyone moves through it in their own way 💙

Every person who lives with mental health challenges or should expect to have the supports and the opportunity to live their best life. Recovery should not be viewed as an aspiration or an exception to the rule, but an expectation. The fact that it does not, is a flaw in the healthcare system. #StopSuicide

On this day in 1951, Henrietta Lacks passed away from cervical cancer at just 31 years old. Her HeLa cells, taken without her knowledge or consent, went on to transform medical research and contribute to countless breakthroughs. Today, we honor Henrietta by remembering the woman behind the science and ensuring her name and legacy are never forgotten. Rest in Power.

Mental Illness Awareness Week starts today. 💚
Science helps us better understand mental illness. Lived experience helps us understand what that knowledge means for real people, families, and communities.
This week, we’re bringing the two together as we explore how we can turn science into hope.

Even the people who seem to have it all together can be struggling in silence. 🧡
Checking in on your friends, especially those who are always there for others, can make a huge difference. A "How are you really doing?" lets them know they don't have to carry everything alone. 💬

If someone you care about is battling thoughts of suicide, or struggling with severe depression, listen to them, validate their challenges, and ask how you can help. Don’t label their actions as attention seeking or say things like, “you should just try harder”. Imagine if that same person were struggling to breathe. Your immediate reaction would be to offer help and support, not accusing them of attention seeking or telling them they should “try harder”. #StopSuicide
