Petition to make Lua as ubiquitous in K-12 as Python has (inexplicably) become. This is a joke, but also if you know me you know it's not really a joke
This doesn't get enough attention. It boggles my mind how hard it is for educators to give students a clean, simple, consistent, cross-platform Python programming experience, which is supposed to be so "easy". From noenthuda.com/2023/04/20/the… by @karthiks.

There's a widespread myth that Python is "easy to learn" or whatever and I'm here to tell you that it just isn't. I would trade CircuitPython for CircuitC or CircuitLua in a second and beyond that I'd rather just be teaching Picotron

While I'm wishcasting about scripting languages let's get a gradually-typed Lua variant?? Not sure how this would work but it's be useful for educators like me who hate computers

A huge downside to mostly using fedi these days is that I tend to forget that truly random people will show up on my TL here bearing gifts of wild, rancid, steaming takes. On fedi I get to block dicecamp entirely and move on with my life

Hey if you make creative coding tools for learners please check out this paper. Extending a tool created, used, & maintained by an existing community of artists is so much more powerful than developing new tools & colonizing existing creative epistemologies.

Castor & Pollux II? It's more likely than you think....

Yo since when are test scores all that teachers expect from students? I don't know a single teacher (except for AP teachers, those courses break people) who care about this. CS ed orgs--don't let people who don't teach talk about teaching.

All the breathless LLM optimism from this org is very discouraging. And so, so boring.

Installing bike infrastructure to provide safe routes from neighborhoods to public school buildings for students
if you could earn good tech money ($200k/£100k/€100k; if you make more now, take that number) doing literally any job you want, what would you do? would you stay in tech, or do something completely different? for this exercise it has to be a full-time job.

I have yet to produce the right mix of good brain chemicals, nice furniture, storage, and interesting decorations which would allow me to move and not spend a ton of money to make my home livable. Why don't they teach this in schools! All I learned was how to do my taxes

This is obviously a joke, but after a brief reflection the fact that lots of folks don't learn how to do their taxes in school is pretty compelling evidence that public schools are captured by libertarian right-wing politics. That's what makes my joke really great, imo.

Okay if you work for an education nonprofit and you made a poster or infographic this year to "support teachers" have you considered making instructional materials instead bc boy howdy are there a lot of infographics and very few examples of solid instruction out there

I think CS ed is particularly vulnerable to framework bloat & praxis avoidance bc we have a bajillion nonprofits doing policy work and like, maybe a dozen preservice teacher ed programs. Bad news folks--the 5 lesson plans you made 3 years ago aren't filling the gap

And don't even get me started on the boxed curricula that currently serve as our field's de facto methods courses. What a nightmare.

This one is a banger, y'all. Also check out the other episode on ANOTHER Eisner piece from last week!
This week's #CSK8 Podcast episode unpacks Eisner’s (2002) publication titled “The centrality of curriculum and the function of standards: The curriculum is a mind-altering device,” which explores how curricla/standards can deprofessionalize the field: youtu.be/GOi_lUUMIsI

Another day, another breathless tweet by a veteran teacher hyping LLMs. Boring.
