Our society is energy blind. Especially our economists are. Truly understanding energy changes 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 and sometimes one paper is all you need to "learn how to see".

#climatescam Basic physics tells us that increased CO2 levels must result in increased temperatures, rising sea levels, receding glaciers and land ice, depleting sea ice, acidifying oceans. These and other lines of evidence are all observed.

Communities near Barrick Gold’s Pueblo Viejo mine report that they experience significant legacy & current environmental contamination. There are communities within half a kilometer of the base of the mine's tailings dam.

Earth-blind @AlexEpstein thinks that if humans are flourishing, everything is fine.
He should listen to a real energy expert.

“My argument is ‘we need to switch our hostility toward impact. This view that human impact is bad needs to be challenged. Human impact is good if it makes the earth a better place for human flourishing.’”

But... but... the minerals!
Clean energy really is just cleaner, even accounting for greenhouse gas emissions from across the lifecycle. Minerals production and refining and all. Study after study confirms. A nice summary here from @IEA
How much cleaner are the clean energy technologies such as renewables, electric cars, heat pumps, and hydrogen compared to the dominant technologies?
Significantly. Here’s a neat summary graph from @IEA’s Energy Technology Perspectives 2023.

Here’s a short take from to critical mineral output & reserve growth.
TLDR: Mine production is growing but the reserve growth is far exceeding the demand. We are not running out of minerals. 1/5

New study underscores we have ample materials for the energy transition and producing them will only eat 1-9% of our carbon budget.
So by all means convince people to reduce consumption, but *please* don't impede the transition to renewables.
However, it excludes batteries...
We see a lot of concern today that renewables and other clean electricity will require too much materials, and producing those will break our remaining carbon budget.
We have a new paper out today we find that these concerns are overblown. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

But even if we have enough materials available, what will producing all these materials do for the climate? Emissions from production are not negligible; meeting a 1.5C target will result in 4 to 29 Gt CO2eq emissions through 2050. But this is 1% to 9% of remaining carbon budget.
