As a proud Union member I couldnβt agree with this more. Iβm on the SAG-AFTRA low budget committee because Iβve been on both sides many times and itβs always frustrated me so much how difficult they make it to shoot an indie feature. IATSE and DGA are even more difficult, so much so most low budget films donβt even go through them. Itβs crazy. Combine that with tax incentives, ease of shootings, etc, We gotta do something if we want more original films to shoot in the US, let alone LA.
"Mud" and "Loving" director Jeff Nichols says shooting indie movies in America is "nearly impossible." He shot his next movie, "King Snake," in Arkansas "out of necessity."
"Itβs devastating. Studios negotiate contracts with these guilds and unions, and I suppose when they make agreements that they donβt ultimately want to pay for the results if they take production elsewhere. Iβve been in Georgia, and from what Iβve heard itβs been a pretty devastating blow with Disney taking everything to London; the work there has been challenging since this last round of strikes and everything else. The thing is, American independent filmmakers do have to abide by those contracts β and they werenβt built for us. We really need to look, as an industry, at independent film production β what it provides, what it costs β and we need more flexibility in those contracts, and more flexibility from our unions and our guilds in order to make things at different price points so that as independent film producers we have a fighting chance to keep things in the U.S. The truth is, as state-based subsidies continue to change and move, thatβs not enough. We have to find ways to have independent film producers stay in the United States, and itβs a massive challenge, so that in between the big studio films thereβs a thriving ecosystem of film."

People are getting less literate in the literal sense, but their illiteracy extends to audio/video now? They just⦠react immediately to the overall ~vibe~ and not the actual content. Makes me wonder where language itself will be in the next few years
