We’ve been quiet about protein design at @Xaira_Thera . Here’s what we’ve been building: Introducing X-Design, with results from two active drug programs that show what we think this field needs to deliver: speed to a useful lead, and access to targets that have resisted discovery. → 7 weeks from DNA synthesis to a preclinical lead on an oncology target, with the epitope and reagents already prepared. → A functional antibody antagonist against a challenging GPCR where conventional library screening AND llama immunization had failed. The bar we set for our model goes well beyond binding. The antibodies need to be human-like, functional, cross-reactive across species, and developable. Properties that have to come together in the same molecule for a program to move forward. That’s what makes these results exciting to me: designs tested in the lab, meeting the requirements of real programs in our pipeline. My bet is that the biggest impact of AI protein design will be expanding which diseases and targets we can pursue. We want to choose targets because the biology is compelling and to build the ability to make the right molecules. This is our first look at X-Design. Much more to come. Yes! Thank you @EricTopol for highlighting this concept. The @kat_howe lab and @FishLab_UHN have been working on loss of endothelial identity in atherosclerosis - a key disease of aging. See howeandfishlabs.com for links: nature communications and genome medicine papers
If we're ever going to slow aging, we need to maintain the identity of our cells. Most people in this poll were unfamiliar with the loss of cell identity model of aging. You can learn about it in Ground Truths (link in my profile)

Canada 🇨🇦 and most of the world have relied heavily on the 🇺🇸 to lead, fund, and translate/commercialize the research that drives all progress. It is time for Canada and the world to step up. Time to lead.
Breaking News: Federal officials are drafting an executive order that would help cement President Trump’s ability to control billions of dollars in scientific grants funded by the National Institutes of Health. nyti.ms/4yhi6RS

Thanks for sharing. Congrats @vkhosla for this piece - an honest moment for physicians. If there’s a better and safer way, we need to embrace it - embedded in our Hippocratic oath. Seems this is a case of the Innovator’s Dilemma….

New research from @UHN’s @PMunkCardiacCtr shows that the protein ERG helps protect blood vessels from changes that drive atherosclerosis—the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Findings could point to future therapeutic strategies to protect arteries. 🔗: uhnresearch.ca/news/9-04-202…

Amazing work put together by a brilliant team who are championing the critical importance of looking much earlier in life. The power of preventing heart attacks and strokes starts with knowledge! #protectyourvessels
Presented at #ESCCongress: Among 16,808 adults without known cardiovascular disease, silent atherosclerosis was present in 57.1%, was detectable in early adulthood, and became more prevalent and extensive with age in a sex-dependent pattern. Full REACT trial results: nej.md/46gp1hP @escardio
