Gut-wrenching and paralyzing!
Go well, Mme.
Tragedy has struck the deaf community following the killing of Barbara Kiyaga Bassozi, the founder and Executive Director of Deaf Link Uganda.
Bassozi was gunned down last night at Mucha Lodge in Kisoro District, where she was spending a four-day holiday to mark her 58th birthday.
The Lens online news platform reports that the attack took place in Kiraro Village, Rwingwe Parish, Nyakabande Sub-County, in the early hours of Thursday, November 5, 2026, between 1:00 AM and 2:00 AM, when locals heard gunshots.
Early investigations indicate that the lodge security guard was shot in the legs as he exchanged fire with the attackers. The gunmen later broke into the premises and shot Bassozi dead. She was hit seven times, and police reportedly picked up fifteen spent cartridges from the scene.
Bassozi was a highly educated and experienced advocate. She earned a Master's degree in Deaf Education from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. in 2003, and a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education from Makerere University.
For more than 35 years, she worked with deaf and deafblind adults across the world, including in the United Kingdom and India, teaching life skills and reproductive health to deaf youth.
Through Deaf Link Uganda, she championed access to communication, challenged stigma against deaf people, advocated for sign language in Uganda's national curriculum, and worked to open up economic opportunities for the deaf community.
Her global contribution was recognized in 2013 when she received the prestigious Edward Miner Gallaudet Award for her service to deaf people internationally.

My dear daughter Charlene,
Few moments bring a father greater joy than seeing his daughter find love, happiness and a companion with whom to build a future. I have watched you grow from the little girl I once held in my arms into the strong, compassionate and remarkable young woman you are today. As you and Yunge exchanged your wedding vows in Mwanza, Tanzania, my heart was filled with pride, gratitude and profound happiness.

I was nosing around the @_AfricanUnion today when look what I came across! A beautiful bronze sculpture of our national emblem, The Crested Crane atop a map of Africa on a pedestal, designed and cast by Oloya Peter Paul and gifted to the AU by the Government of Uganda. I felt a thrill for this sculptor. Being a creative will bring you in the presence of kings while others are fighting with protocol. Anyone who knows this artist please tell him his baby is doing alright in the main AU Lobby and is making Uganda proud. Better still please share till it gets to him.

Pleased to see so many foreign ministers and senior officials at our Commonwealth Ministerial Meeting on Small States in St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda today.
In a time of global uncertainty, small states deserve a stronger voice in the decisions that affect them and also a financial system that works for them.
Our response must be to mobilise partnerships and investment to advance the Commonwealth agenda for resilience and shared prosperity.
The success of our small states is a measure of the success of our 56 Commonwealth countries. #CHOGM2026

The King has paused for a moment of reflection at the spot in Georgetown where dozens of public executions took place during the brutal crushing of the Demerara Slave Rebellion of 1823.
While he will not be giving a speech touching on the issue during the latest leg of his three-country official Caribbean tour, His Majesty was still keen to acknowledge historic wrongs during his two-day State Visit to Guyana.
