This tweet and the NYT article are both dishonest. HHS/DEA did not back down but asked for scientific opinion on a 7OH threshold. It also updated science on MGPI to include a threshold as it is not only semi-synthetic but can occur naturally in insignificant amounts in kratom
A number of kratom companies discovered mitragynine pseudoindoxyl (MGPI) in products marketed as “natural” in recent months. MGPI is a semi-synthetic opioid that has been found in lab tests to be far more powerful than morphine. It had been identified in at least 56 overdose cases, 48 of which were fatal, from February last year to this May. A major GOP donor and manager of one such large kratom company, facing culpability in several wrongful death lawsuits against him, mounted a concerted multi-milllion dollar lobbying push to reverse the ban. It worked. 🎁: nytimes.com/2026/10/28/us/po…

We wrote about this issue in August. DEA and AKA both previously stated MGPI was only a semi-synthetic product. They were wrong as it is a metabolite of 7OH. Those who need to catch up can read here for context kratomscience.com/2026/08/25…

Case report: man found dead after ingesting 87mg of 7OH tablets in addition to "several beers" plus "gabapentin and other medications...at subtherapeutic concentrations". Multi-substance ingestion is always risky whether its 7oh, mitragynine, kratom, et al annemergmed.com/article/S019…

Local officials don't seem to be getting the message that HHS has been putting out since July 2025 and recently emphasized here on Twitter that natural leaf kratom (also known as "kratom") should be legal and only 7OH/MP should be banned

What did the media get wrong about the tragedy at Ole Miss? Almost all of it. If you know of more fictitious posts from the media please submit. This is well worth reading. Bottom line, most everything the media claimed was wrong. Time to fix the record! kratomscience.com/2026/09/29…

This honestly does not seem serious when he is calling for emergency scheduling molecules that have already been emergency scheduled ("MGM 15&16+MP"). Hopefully it's just pre-election "tough on drugs" showboating
Deadly kratom is on the rise Trump admin needs to STOP KRATOM ASAP I sent lttr urging DEA/FDA 2take immediate action & limit access 2 kratom&related synthetic substances incl 7OH+MGM 15&16+MP   Thx Sens Lee&Collins 4 joining me We r working 2 protect USA families frm this poison

Republicans are urging the DEA to schedule the "kratom plant". Their words.
🚨 Chairman @ChuckGrassley, @SenMikeLee and @SenatorCollins are calling on the Trump administration to protect American families from deadly kratom and semi-synthetic substances like 7-OH. Federal scheduling would keep these addictive drugs off gas station shelves and out of the hands of our nation's children.

Replying to @ChuckGrassley
Senator, “all kratom is deadly” simply isn’t a serious way to discuss this issue. I’ve consumed kratom for more than a decade, advocated for testing, age restrictions, accurate labeling and responsible regulation, and watched Congress spend years failing to create meaningful federal standards. Raw kratom leaf, concentrated extracts, 7 OH products and newer manufactured derivatives should not simply be treated as though they are all the same thing. Protect kids. Regulate the market. Enforce age limits. Require testing and honest labels. Fund the science. But fear based claims and prohibition are not substitutes for good policy. I wrote about why here - medium.com/@DrewTurnerMedia/…

We've been a website since 2013 before kratom was called anything but the leaves from the kratom tree. That's still the definition by the way

It was stated by local police, then widely reported that "kratom" was found at the scene. Later reports state a product called "SMAX Pseudo DHM" was found, which is not kratom but possibly MGM-15 and/or mitragynine-pseudoindoxyl, two substances that are already banned federally
The media is usually terrible in its reporting on kratom. Tracking all the false statements is like trying to stop a flood one teaspoon at a time. For what it's worth, here's our attempt: "Media Drops Ball on Kratom Reporting After Ole Miss Deaths" kratomscience.com/2026/09/29…
