India’s private investment story is stuck. Despite strong GDP growth and heavy public capex, the nominal investment share in GDP remains 5 percentage points below its 2007-08 peak. Manufacturing is the weakest link — machinery and equipment investment by private firms plunged 17 percentage points since 2011-12.
@renukohli_eco and @kritima_20 offer solutions in this blog.

Thrilled to share the publication of my first research paper, co-authored with Dr. Renu Kohli, titled "Private Investment: Intentions vs. Realization", in the latest issue of the Indian Public Policy Review (IPPR) Journal
Replying to @anupammanur
The brilliant paper by @renukohli_eco and Kritima explores the rather large difference between intended (& announced) private capex and actual investment and the potential reasons for this.

Long before I understood economics, I dreamed of being an economist like you—your legacy profoundly shaped my career, making this loss feel personal. This photo is from a 1991 file signed by Dr. Singh, which I found during my time at the GOI. Will always treasure it #RIP, Sir 🙏

Kritima Bhapta attended 3-day workshop on "Decarbonising Southeast Asia: The Policy-Tech Interplay," at the Institute for Environment and Sustainability - @LKYSch, @NUSingapore.
An increasing mismatch between planned private capital expenditure and the actual creation of fixed assets provides a new perspective on the longstanding issue of weak private investment in India. Dr. Renu Kohli and I write for @HindustanTimes

India faces tight budget constraints for its #climategoals, with limited external support. Implementing #carbonpricing could generate substantial revenue. With gasoline & diesel already heavily taxed, diversifying revenue streams is essential.
Read our piece in @FinancialXpress
What is the potential revenue that the government could raise, should it decide to introduce carbon pricing?
Recognising the fiscal limitations, Janak Raj, Valbha Shakya, & @kritima_20 discuss strategies to generate resources for climate finance.

RBI’s annual analysis of private corporate investment reveals imp improvement in the near-term outlook for private investment, yet notes a steep decline in conversion rates of intended capex to actual capex.
In today's session, @renukohli_eco & @kritima_20 explore the issue.
Can we have #ClimateAction without #ClimateJustice ? #COP28 agreement falls short on #financial commitments, leaving developing nations on the hook. Is this fair? Is COP28 just another empty promise?
The COP28 deal at least mentions reducing fossil fuels, but it omits any promises by rich countries to help poorer ones transition to clean energy, @markgongloff says trib.al/uqph9EI via @opinion
It was a privilege to present my work to such a distinguished panel today

The signing of the free trade agreement between #India and #Europe might take a while as a senior #EuropeanUnion official said in the #EU, its “substance” matters more than a deadline and further discussion is needed.

As my term at @FinMinIndia comes to an end, I reflect on the most rewarding experience of my professional journey thus far. Witnessing such high-level negotiations firsthand and participating in the drafting of the #G20Communique, even in a small way, felt surreal. #G20India
Grateful for the opportunity!
Thanks to @sarttac member countries & development partners for excellent guidance & discussions at today’s 7th annual Steering Committee Meeting, with the strong support of all welcomed going into the next five-year phase of operations starting in 2024.

On Manmohan Singh’s birthday here’s an excerpt from my diary 11 May 2010: “India’s outstanding performance of growing each year above 9% from 2005 to 08, which made it an international story, owes a lot to MMS’s professionalism…his modesty & focus on work rather than publicity.”
