The man on the phone said he worked with her mom. He said her mom had been promoted, and he needed help picking out a surprise gift. 37 years ago today, October 27, 1989. Bay Village, Ohio, a quiet suburb on Lake Erie. Amy Mihaljevic was 10. She loved horses. The caller told her to keep the gift a secret. She told her brother and a friend anyway. After school she walked from Bay Middle School to the Bay Square shopping center to meet him. Two witnesses later said they saw a man lead her to a gold-colored car. Then she was gone. The search was one of the biggest in Ohio's history. Thousands of leads. Thousands of interviews. John Walsh put her face on America's Most Wanted. On February 8, 1990, her body was found in a field in rural Ashland County, more than 50 miles from home. Investigators believe she was left there soon after she was taken. Some of her things were never found, including her horse-riding boots and her earrings shaped like horse heads. Investigators believe the killer kept them. Years later came a chilling discovery. Other girls in nearby North Olmsted had gotten the same kind of call: a man claiming to work with their mothers, asking for help buying a gift for a promotion. Detectives have collected DNA, named persons of interest, and never stopped working the case. No one has ever been charged.
