Yeah, the public is being deeply unreasonable here. Fine to prefer to different weighting, of course, but indefensible to be "aghast" at a reasonable take on a difficult philosophical question — especially in the context of an unusually generous grad student reasoning through their decision about where to donate a hefty chunk of their stipend. The dunkers demonstrate much less virtue.

A Learjet 60 crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida earlier today. The pilot reported moderate turbulence along with icing conditions. The aircraft departed Austin, Texas heading towards the Bahamas. The pilot later reported descending at 20,000 feet per minute.

Lots of AI people made it low status to comment on shortfalls and failures of models, or the fact that they're not reallty automating jobs fully and so on. Any scrutiny means you're not 'AGI pilled' (which is not a claim about technology but sometimes a quasi-religious one about its impacts and adoption). It's a shame because it's actually very interesting to explore the spikiness, jaggedness, failures, complementarities and so on; but for a lot of people this is almost a waste of time because 'something something future models!1!!' means they get to just parrot 'this is the worst the models will ever be' whilst dismissing any crumb of empiricism away because they've already worked out the future based on theory and projections alone.
To be fair I sympathise with them to a degree because the 'other sides' aren't any better, essentially over-indexing on short-term failures (Rs in strawberry etc) and extrapolating from these to dismiss the technology completely. But I care less about what these people think about capabilities since time just proves them wrong rapidly enough. Why would you exercise vibe arbitrage over such a cheap target? I also find it painfully boring to constantly litigate 'AI skeptics' - there are more interesting and thornier discussions to be had.

A Learjet 60 private jet, en route from Texas to the Bahamas, crashed near Palm Beach this afternoon.
The aircraft was in a steep dive at the time of the crash, descending at more than 30k feet per minute.

par contre quand on déploie ce genre de truc dans le civil pour moi le vrai drame c’est qu’on accélère juste l’atrophie cognitive car en voulant supprimer le filtre de la verbalisation sous pretexte que taper ou parler est trop lent on oublie que la pensée humaine a besoin de la friction de la formulation pour se structurer et se clarifier
