A file in your Downloads folder can hijack your coding agent.
Last week, a coding agent on a developer’s laptop tried to install a known-malicious npm package. Nobody typed the command. A text file did.
The file was called AGENTS.md, and it was sitting in the developer’s Downloads folder. Forever Security, who caught it, published the details on 22 October. There was no bug and no exploit. The agent did exactly what it was built to do.

A year ago, AI coding tools suggested code. We'd read it and decide whether to run it.
Now they run it. They install packages, execute tests, call APIs and open pull requests, while reading text from strangers: README files, GitHub issues, web pages. Usually with the same access as the engineer who started them.

This caught my eyes as I walked to baggage collection after I landed Arlanda airport stockhoIm, dunno how I missed it during my last visit.
I enjoy teaching. My younger self wanted to be a professor, and I'm glad I still get to teach while pursuing the other things I love. This is my third cohort this year.
