For Armistice Day here’s a very touching account by Lord (Tom) Denning about the death of his brother Jack on the Somme.

Bought an 8mm camera which, despite costing only a tenner, can do high speed and single frame as well as 18 and 24fps. I shot a test roll in different conditions — low light, artificial light, daylight etc. Pointless buy really, but strangely evocative results.

A crested china model of a kind my ancestors very likely sold from Bunyan's Cottage- Willow Art China (Hewitt & Leadbeater / Hewitt Bros), Longton, c.1907-1925
Another postcard of my ancestors' home, John Bunyan's Cottage in Elstow, found at the great Keel Row bookshop in Whitley Bay when we were there in the spring.

🇺🇸 A rare image of General Ulysses S. Grant standing on a numbered platform with twenty-four cameras at every angle around him. This was no ordinary portrait. It was “photosculpture,” a process invented in 1859 by Frenchman François Willème. It was taken in New York. Grant’s head is steadied by the iron stabilizer visible behind him. Twenty-four cameras ringed the room, each 15 degrees apart, all aimed at a central point marked by a hanging plumb line. You can see the plumb bob hanging over his head. The simultaneous shots gave enough angles to build a three-dimensional model. It is an early attempt at what we now call 3D imaging. Small plaster statuettes of Grant were made from the photos. Grant wears the four-star uniform of General of the Army, a rank created for him in July 1866. The sitting therefore falls between then and August 1867, when the plaster figures are dated. Photographers Huston & Kurtz made him one of their first subjects. The metal stand with the projecting prongs is the old studio headrest, used to hold a man motionless during the long exposures of the wet-plate era. Unfortunately, the full set of 24 prints has not survived. Photo from Grants Presidential Library.

THE GAUMONT PHONOSCÈNE SOUND ON DISC SYSTEM (1905-07) Alice Ida Antoinette Guy-Blaché demonstrates a 'behind-the-scenes' 'sound-on-disc' set, filmed at the Gaumont studio at Buttes-Chaumont, Paris January 1907. Alice is in the foreground, bent over. Anatole Thiberville on camera. Runs :52. The Phonoscène is a particularly important part of post cinema history because it represents an early, practical attempt to combine moving pictures with recorded sound. At Gaumont's studios at Buttes-Chaumont in Paris, Alice directed performances intended to be experienced with sound recorded separately on a phonograph cylinder first, then a disc. The crucial distinction is that the Phonoscène was not simply a film accompanied by a gramophone record. It was part of a coordinated system for recording, synchronizing and exhibiting image and sound. The technical details—and how reliably synchronization was achieved—are worth examining separately from the films themselves. The system was developed under Léon Gaumont with the assistance of engineer Léopold René Decaux. It's development involved three main problems: recording sound, reproducing it loudly enough for an audience, and keeping the sound synchronized with the projected film. This remarkable behind-the-scenes film shows Alice at work in the glass-roofed studio. The footage reveals the camera, sound equipment, powerful arc lamps, reflectors and performers rehearsing their movements. Guy-Blaché appears to be responsible for operating the playback equipment and coordinating the start of the recording.
