Ships that enter the Great Lakes must travel through the Welland Canal. The 27-mile canal contains eight locks, and its entire length runs within Ontario, Canada. This means that $26.3 billion of American trade is dependent on having unimpeded access to a waterway entirely under Canadian jurisdiction. I bet Trump never thought about that.
