Out today in Nature Human Behaviour: our review of large language models in computational social science, with @xu_fengli, @yongli and colleagues at @Tsinghua_Uni, @hkust & @MSFTResearch Asia. A thread on what we found, including where the field is fooling itself.

Terence Tao has contributed a new mathematical puzzle to The Guardian, timed to coincide with the publication of his first general-audience mathematics book, Six Math Essentials.
The puzzle looks like a simple game about growing plants and collecting coins, but it hides an elegant connection between algebra, quadratic growth and the decimal number system.

One of the reasons so many average people stay poor is because they believe they are special. They believe their life is going to magically change because they're going to get a letter in the mail from magic school inviting them on an adventure.
The reality is, we get those letters every single day. They just look like risk and a shitload of work, with no guarantee of a payoff.

We're about to enter a period where not reading or writing becomes as ubiquitous as smoking once was. We can hope people will eventually realize this is bad for them, as they did with smoking. But this is far from certain; the cost may not be as obvious.

The craziest part about the Switch 2 datamining situation is that people deep within the scene have known about this vulnerability for a long time, but kept quiet to avoid triggering a massive response from Nintendo.
Now, we're seeing people extract and publish code and data from multiple games at an unprecedented scale.
It's exciting for preservation and research, but it could also backfire hard. Nintendo will inevitably start patching whatever they can, potentially shutting down access to things the scene has been quietly working towards for months.
We're witnessing a goldmine of discoveries, but also potentially the beginning of the end for a lot of work that was never meant to become public this soon.
