ALT CHILDREN'S BOOKS 26-30 June 2023 at Senate House, University of London A five-day course exploring children's books, from alphabet books to career novels, picturebooks to contemporary Young Adult fiction. Through expert talks, handling sessions and visits to major libraries and rare booksellers, we'll trace developments in format, design, content, readership and reception, from the eighteenth century to the present. Details and booking: ies.sas.ac.uk/lrbs The text is part of a flyer advertising this course. There is an image of five shelved books with illustrated dust-jackets, published by Nelson, of the 'stories for boys and girls' variety. One girl is punting, another is holding an blown-out umbrella, one is running along a beach, etc.

ALT A page from Eric Carle's classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which reads 'On Thursday he ate through four strawberries, but he was still hungry'. The illustration is four strawberries in a row across the middle of the page , with holes punched through them. (Plus an orange from the facing page, which is what he eats on Friday. The orange also has a hole in.)

ALT The front cover of Jenny Lives with Eric and Martin, by Susanne Bösche, translated into English from Danish and published in the UK by Gay Men's Press in 1983. It's a black-and-white photo book about Jenny, her dad and his boyfriend. The bw pics have blue borders and the title text makes its way down the page at jaunty angles. The background is a vivid, almost florescent yellow. The book was wrongly accused by various tabloid newspapers of being 'homosexual propaganda' taught in schools (in fact, it was only available in one London teachers centre) and led directly to the introduction of the discriminatory legislation, Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988, which forbade the 'promotion of homosexuality' by local authorities as a so-called 'pretended family relationship'. Section 28 was eventually repealed in Scotland in 2000 and in England and Wales in 2003.
