It’s impossible to not be radicalised in Leith these days; but Storries wanting £6.80 for two pies really is the tipping point.

📜 150 years ago today, on November 4th 1876, Andrew Hughes played for Hibs against Edinburgh Swifts on The Meadows.
On his way home to Cowgate, he intervened to protect a woman being attacked. Hughes was struck on the head and died five days later, aged just 21.
What episodes of A Place In The Sun you watch is a clear class indicator, by the way.
Canary Islands, Costa Del Sol - working class.
France, Italian Alps - middle class.

Patrick Stewart was, like many of the greatest British artists of the 20th Century, a working class boy who became a world-class artist thanks to a public arts education made possible by Post War social democracy. He never forgot it.

Sir Patrick Stewart's first TV appearance as a fireman in Coronation Street (1967)
Another day on Easter Road, and with Greggs and Baynes next door to one another, I don’t know why anybody would even think there’s any debate there. Baynes every single time categorically.

54. An Injury to All: The Unmaking of the British Working Class by @ewangibbs. This variegated portrait of working class Britain since the 1960s is as an urgent rejoinder to myths that plague our current political discourse, restoring workers as agents of their own history.
If anybody needed confirmation that Leith is beyond saving, saw a grown adult and a clear incomer last night wearing a half and half Hibs and Ghent scarf. A high scorer on the gentrification bingo card.
Spot on. A deeply overrated, dull, uninspiring musician who seems to do a lot of hanging on musically and socially.

Sometimes theatre throws up performances where you can almost see the actor ‘act’. At other times the actor totally inhabits a character such that you really get sense of who that character is (for example, see @markthannah ‘Athens’ monologues). Scott is 🔥 here. Beautiful.
Andrew Scott delivers this speech too slowly; I know some viewers will hate the way he breaks up the verse. AND YET even in spite of that I think this is the best delivery of this soliloquy I’ve ever seen.
He makes it sound like it’s not a portentous speech everyone already knows but a morally serious real-time deliberation, by a highly intelligent person in extreme pain, considering what it would mean to end his own life.
