This is correct, right here. To explain something this complex, which touches the very basis of how we see the world and conceptualize "good" and "evil," you have to listen twice as much as you speak. To do otherwise is to imply the other party is foolish or ignorant; an attitude that suggests "well, Japanese people haven't thought about God at all." If that was true we wouldn't even be having this discussion. They'd be like children at school, nodding along, interested to hear about these new things. It's precisely BECAUSE Japanese people already have deep thoughts about good and evil and God that they are confused, and saying "I don't get that at all, your way of thinking about it makes no sense to me." Because they already have their own way of thinking about it!
A conversation is something that takes place between people of equal status. If they come in acting like they're better than you, well, who the hell would be patient with that kind of attitude!?

Feel free to tell those jackasses to "take a long walk off a short pier," as we say in English. In the Christian religion, educating others on Christianity is called "witnessing;" and it's meant to help them find the way to God. In short, an act of love. If they can't even be POLITE to you, then how can they possibly witness to you? Even if a Japanese person is rude to them first, that's still no excuse; the cultural background of East and West is quite different on this topic so is it REALLY a surprise when someone says "you nailed your God to a stick!? What the hell is wrong with you!?" If anything, that's a GOOD sign because it shows Japanese people have a strong sense of morality already. Didn't the big piracy debate already settle that, anyway? I've written long posts back when the Great Cultural Exchange first started explaining Christianity for the Japanese specifically because I thought a moral and upstanding people would quickly understand (and despite cultural differences, they did.)
Sorry for the long reply, but the kind of people you're talking about piss me off a lot, no matter what the context of the situation is.

As a Catholic, I think Shinto and Buddhism have a lot of beautiful things in them, but I also think they're wrong in a lot of places, and my religion is the one true way to God.
I don't understand how you can believe in something if you don't think it's "the best"

Tajine Zitoune ... is one of Algeria’s most famous traditional dishes. It is made with chicken or meat, pitted green olives, and a flavorful sauce enriched with aromatic herbs and spices. It can be prepared with either a white sauce or a red tomato-based sauce ... 🙂

I’m Japanese, and I’m currently a Catholic inquirer.
Lately, I’ve been seeing posts on X where Christians and Muslims encourage Japanese people to embrace their respective faiths, presumably out of goodwill. (And I assume it is goodwill, right?)
But I think they’re choosing just about the worst possible approach.
Fundamentally, that way of sharing your faith simply doesn’t work with Japanese people.
I think you’d do well to think of Japanese people as a mirror.
Treat them with kindness, and they’ll return that kindness.
Treat them with arrogance, and they’ll reflect that arrogance right back at you.
So what happens when you dismiss the religions and beliefs Japanese people hold dear?
What happens when you try to impose your God on them?
They’ll simply mirror that behavior back at you.
(And really, wouldn’t you feel angry, hurt, and offended if someone dismissed your God or your faith? Japanese people feel exactly the same way.)
Japanese people may seem as though they have no gods, no faith, and no religion.
But our faith and prayers are woven into the fabric of our everyday lives.
I understand that this might seem very strange to Christians and Muslims.
But even as a Japanese person who believes in Christ and worships the Lord as the one true God, I can’t help thinking that this approach to spreading your faith is one disastrous move after another.
