Last night I was struck — really, almost radicalized — watching in real time as experts at the heights of their careers boosted emotionally satisfying narratives that were pretty much entirely wrong.

If the most significant event in my life was an extramarital affair with Britain's least successful prime minister, I would simply not write an autobiography.

EUR/GBP. Though regularly used as an alarm call to justify underlying political priors, it's really been remarkably dull for the past 15 years.
Hmm… what are the most interesting charts that are interesting by virtue of being “boring”—that is, by showing *no* upwards or downwards trend?

A reminder to journalists covering the Pavel Durov arrest: Telegram is NOT an "encrypted messenger". WhatsApp messages and groups are fully encrypted. Facebook and Instagram DMs are encrypted by default. Telegram messages are not usually encrypted and groups can't be at all.

Just because you’re loud doesn’t mean you’re popular. The thugs on Britain’s streets last night tried to shriek and bully us into thinking they had a majority on their side, when the only thing they had on their side was bricks. The rest was noise. They’re a tiny fraction of a country that’s much bigger and more generous than they’ll ever be.

A brief thread while we wait for the exit polls. In 2001 I worked for the BBC and doing all the constituency research used by the team on R4/5 on the live overnight broadcast. That night I was seated at the right hand of James Naughtie, handing him info as the count came in

1/4 My favourite Alison Uttley story comes from Gwyn Headley regarding Miss Uttley's one and only 'meet the author' event. To paraphrase: "She stood on a curtained dais, and on the dot of 12 the curtain rose. A howling crowd of excited children stormed the stage...

So...Mammals normally store fat under the skin in an even layer, but camels evolved to pile fat in one spot, so the rest of their bodies can stay cool in the desert. Why don't other desert animals do this? Well, they do.... but for some reason, we never talk about them..... 🧵🧵

Don't know how much it was a factor today but there is an issue that nothing real is happening in politics. There is barely any legislation going through the Commons; no policies being announced; everyone has to say stuff they know isn't true because of the election.

I don’t think we use the term “race” these days. But hard to find a useful replacement. “AI ethnicity” just doesn’t sound right.
