Think of your least favorite presidential candidate. Now imagine s/he wins. Doesn’t limiting government power seem like a good idea?
Today’s health insurance affordability crisis is a rerun of the one Kentucky faced in the 1990s. The cause is the same. The path to relief is the same.

Yesterday: I present a paper at a symposium.
Today: two former members of the Cato health policy team (intern, RA) present papers at the same symposium.
Pretty cool.

Free markets bring abundance. Health care is unaffordable because government blocks competition from new hospitals, nurse practitioners, and lower-price medicines sold abroad. Repeal those barriers, says Cato’s @mfcannon.
Why is US Healthcare So Unaffordable
HT to @jasonfurman for flagging a really good thread on the human side of technology displacing jobs.
🧵1/10 Given the recent reactions of mathematicians over rapid advances in AI, I think it is important to remember that technological change has historically been a very personal event for people.
Over the history of technological progress, looms have fallen silent, switchboards have gone dark, and factory lines have shrunk bringing with them a human crisis of identity and what it means to be a master of one's craft.

📈Kentucky premiums jumped 30 percent this year, with 19 percent more planned for 2027.
@mfcannon argues that the state's legislature can offer relief without spending a dime by letting residents buy plans from US territories.

TBF who could've ever predicted that putting the government in charge of something would make it more expensive
Eager to hop a plane tomorrow to present at this conference a health insurance affordability effort that @cobrown and @bluegrasspolicy are bringing to Kentucky.
(Special treat: presenting alongside former Cato colleagues Brittany La Couture and Trisha Singh.)

Ironically, the driving force behind surging Obamacare premiums is…price controls.
Even supporters who know price controls are dumb consider Obamacare’s to be above criticism.
But freeing people from them and other Obamacare regs could save many 60% on their health insurance.
Scoop: Healthcare.gov premiums for benchmark plans are set to rise 11% on average in 2027. It's the 2nd year in a row for double-digit spikes but not nearly as bad as last yr's 30%. Insurer participation is down 14%. washingtonsun.com/health/aca…
"the Federal Government was moving into a major area of medical care with practically no review of alternatives, options, trade-offs, or costs."
The author, who helped enact it, is describing which government venture?
