Many thanks to all those who continue the fight to protect East Suffolk's countryside, National Landscape and Heritage Coast. Do read @SEAScampaign full PR: "...There is also a fundamental question of timing. Sizewell C is not planned to be fully operational until 2039..."
📰📰SEAS are deeply disappointed by the Secretary of State’s decision to approve Sea Link, despite the overwhelming concerns raised by our communities over the past three years. We want to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported the campaign, attended meetings, submitted objections, written letters, raised funds and given their time and energy to protect our beautiful Suffolk countryside and communities. The determination, resilience and unity shown by so many people have been truly remarkable. We should all be proud of what we have achieved together. Although this is not the outcome we had hoped for, our efforts have not been in vain. We have made our voices heard, challenged the proposals and demonstrated the strength of our communities. We will now carefully review the Secretary of State’s decision and the Examining Authority’s recommendations report. If there are grounds and viable routes to challenge the decision, we will endeavour to pursue them. For now, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has stood with us over the past three years. Your support, commitment and determination have meant so much. This may be a setback, but our commitment to protecting Suffolk and advocating for a more sustainable and resilient electricity grid remains unchanged. UK spends 5.1% GDP on state pensions vs an OECD average of 8.1% and an EU average of 12.9%. UK pensions are just 25% of salary replacement vs 76% in Italy and 58% in France - So even with the Triple Lock UK pensioners are lagging behind!

Andy Burnham needs to make it abundantly clear that his plans for social care reform WILL NOT come at the expense of the triple lock, which is lifeline to pensioners up and down the country. This government cannot give with one hand, whilst taking away with the other. We will not accept it. We are living through an age of deep economic inequality, with money being hoarded at the top of our societies. It is time we got real about taxing wealth to fund meaningful social reform, as opposed to continuing to pile this pressure on the shoulders of ordinary people. You can send a postcard to your MP here, and let them know that the triple lock is non-negotiable: unitetheunion.org/why-join/m… #StandUpForSocialCare

…dead right…he will lose important followers if he goes along with this… pensioners struggle enough 😡
If Andy Burnham uses his speech today to begin dismantling the pensions triple lock, even if such a change is deferred until after the next election, he will be venturing into extraordinarily dangerous political territory. The triple lock is not an indulgence bestowed upon pensioners. It exists for a very simple reason: to prevent the value of the State Pension from being steadily eroded by inflation and rising living costs. For millions of pensioners, many of whom have little or no substantial private pension provision, that protection represents a fundamental measure of financial security. There is, unquestionably, a legitimate debate to be had about the long term sustainability of the triple lock, just as there must be an honest debate about how this country intends to fund social care. But it would be a grave political mistake to suggest that one problem can conveniently be solved by weakening the financial security of pensioners. Political history ought to provide sufficient warning. Successive governments have discovered, sometimes painfully, the consequences of policies perceived to penalise pensioners. Theresa May’s experience during the 2017 General Election should remain particularly instructive: proposals for reforming social care rapidly became politically toxic and had to be substantially revised in the midst of an election campaign. If Burnham wishes to make the case for a National Care Service, then he should do so openly and honestly. He should explain what it will cost, how it will be funded and, crucially, who will ultimately be expected to pay for it. What he should not do is treat the pensions triple lock as though it were simply a convenient source of money waiting to be released. Opening that door would be an extraordinary political gamble. It could inflict considerable damage upon Labour while alienating millions of pensioners who have organised their retirement finances in the reasonable expectation that the value of their State Pension will continue to be protected. Andy Burnham would therefore be wise to consider very carefully where this argument leads. Once pensioners are given reason to believe that the security of their State Pension is under threat, the political consequences may prove considerably easier to unleash than to contain.
