every fairy tale is a mother trying to warn her daughter about men without scaring her.
the wolf is charming and knows a shortcut. the prince shows up only after she's already been poisoned. the mermaid gives up her voice for a guy who never learns her name.
we read them as romance. they were written as survival manuals by women who couldn't say any of this directly at bedtime.
little red riding hood is about the first man who is friendly to you on the path and asks where you're going. he's warm, he's curious about you, he already knows a faster way to grandma's house. if he looked like a wolf, she would have run.
the little mermaid is about every girl who made herself smaller to fit into a man's world. she trades the thing that made her special for legs that hurt with every step, and he still marries someone else. everyone has a friend like that. she stopped painting because he thought it was messy. she laughs quieter now. at every dinner she says "it's fine, he's just stressed."
sleeping beauty is about waiting. a whole kingdom asleep for a hundred years because a girl was told her life would begin when the right man arrived. some women are still in that castle at thirty-four, scrolling in bed at 1am, waiting for someone to kiss their real life awake.
the witch in the tower is every parent who looked at the world, saw what it does to soft girls, and decided a locked room was safer than a broken heart. she was wrong. you still understand her the first time your daughter asks if she can walk to her friend's house alone.
cinderella gets saved for staying kind in a house that punished kindness. try doing that for one week. most of us can't manage it through one bad morning at work.
a seven-year-old doesn't notice that the girl always leaves the house. every single story. she climbs down the hair, she swims to the surface, she takes the path she was told to stay off.
no warning ever kept a daughter home, and the women who first told these stories knew it. none of them end with "and she listened and stayed inside forever." nobody would tell that one twice.
they teach her smaller, more useful things.
how to tell a wolf from a man by the way he talks about her grandmother. how to notice when love starts costing her her voice. how to leave the ball at midnight when something feels off, even if it means running down the stairs in one shoe.
how to find her way back.
every parent reading these at bedtime is saying the same thing. go if you have to. remember the way home.
and if you're grown now and still a little lost in the woods, the path is right where you left it.
Having a daughter made me finally understand fairy tales. I know why the witch locked Rapunzel in the tower and kept her hidden from the world as punishment. I know why Cinderella kept her charm and beauty despite her wicked stepmother and stepsisters doing everything they could to make her feel lesser. I know why only a kiss from a courageous man could break a spell of eternal slumber. I know why stepmother's always use poison. I know why a young mermaid would give up her tail to become mortal and mute. I know why young heroines always yearn for trouble, and love to travel into dark and demon-haunted woods, to run toward dangerous men, to get themselves entangled in spells and wolves' trickery. And I know why it always costs them so much to return back home.
And I know why in order to finally get their true love, they have to be willing to give up everything.
Without marketing, no one sees you
Without branding, no one chooses you
Without design, no one trusts you.
Without content, no one hears you.
Without distribution, no one finds you.
Without automation, you can’t scale.
Without innovation, you never stand out.
Without proof, no one believes you.
Growth needs all the above.

Just a few years after helping put Toronto hip-hop on the map, Kardinal Offishall was running out of money, struggling to land gigs and wondering what had gone wrong.

Eminem freestyling live at Tramps in NYC, Jan 9, 1999, weeks before The Slim Shady LP changed everything.
This was a full underground showcase. DJ Eclipse and DJ Riz were the DJs, Bobbito Garcia hosted, and MF DOOM and Sir Menelik were also on the bill, all for a $15 ticket.
"They call me Boogie Night, the stalker that walks awkward/ stick figure, with a dick bigger than Mark Wahlberg"
is one of my favorite early Eminem rhymes ever
1999 was a special type in freestyle rhymes, f'real!
what is one of your favorite OG Eminem rap couplets?

Death Row co-founder Dick Griffey once called the D.O.C. "probably the single most influential person in gangsta rap."
I spoke to the West Coast legend about growing up in West Dallas, writing "We Want Eazy" in 20 minutes, the crash that stole his voice, the secret origins of Death Row, piecing together "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" with Snoop, trading insults with ’Pac in Atlanta, and receiving a Hip Hop Grandmaster Award this weekend from the Paid in Full Foundation.
