John Milton coined ‘sensuous’ so that he wouldn't have to use ‘sensual.’ ‘Sensual’ usually describes gratification of the senses or physical appetites as an end in itself. ‘Sensuous,’ on the other hand, usually implies pleasing of the senses by art or similar means.
Who is inventing words like John Milton these days? He gave us pandemonium, sensuous AND complacency, truly a generational run

Lula's victory is deeply personal for me. Above all, I feel relief: Brazil has prevented the far right from returning to the presidency, alongside a strengthened right in Congress. But the result also exposes challenges facing democracies far beyond Brazil. 1/....

I've been reading analyses on what the Lula campaign did in the last three weeks to win. One of the most effective things they did was to convince people who are already on Lula's side to actually go out and vote. Resulted in a massive voter turn out. Tapos dito, "elections do not change things" ang messaging ng ibang grupo. Lol.

Amidst the relieved celebrations, it was a close-run thing: the Right won the first round, just not by enough, allowing others to recover and make a last-ditch recovery. But the next election? It will be post-Lula while the Right's anointed is relatively young.

This paper answers why can’t you remember being a baby? For over a century, science said you can't remember being a baby because your infant brain was just too "immature" to record anything. researchers assumed your hard drive was basically turned off for the first two years of life. But this wild paper from Yale completely rewrites how we understand human memory.. Researchers literally put awake babies (between 4 and 25 months old) into an fMRI scanner to watch their brains process new visual experiences in real-time. and what they found is mindblowing.. the infant hippocampus isn't turned off at all. it is actively firing, capturing, and encoding episodic memories. they proved that babies with higher hippocampal activity during a new experience formed a highly stable memory trace. the babies are recording the data. the memory of your first birthday, your first steps, the exact layout of the room you slept in.. it was all successfully saved to your brain. so why can't you remember it? the paper concludes that infantile amnesia isn't an "encoding" problem.. it is a "retrieval" problem. your brain recorded everything perfectly. but as you grew, your brain underwent massive developmental shifts, like explosive neurogenesis (the rapid birth of new neurons), which completely restructured your neural networks. the pathways to access those early files got buried or locked away. you didn't fail to make the memories.. you just lost the encryption key to open them. somewhere deep in your hippocampus, the exact first-person memory of being a 1-year-old might still be sitting there. you just can't access the file anymore.. the human brain is terrifyingly beautiful.

Around 1500, Hieronymus Bosch painted sheet music on a sinner's bare butt in hell. 500 years later, someone transcribed and performed it. Now you can hear the original butt song from hell.

Impeachment trial is on break. Cong Pulong Duterte recently filed a libel complaint against GMA executives. Then today, a veteran journalist was arrested for a surprise cyberlibel complaint from Davao city. A coincidence or a counteroffensive? You can smell the playbook from a mile away.

#SciDYK 𝗣𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗣𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗠𝗢𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 Today, with a time zone of UTC +8:00, the Philippines is among the first countries to enter the new day. But did you know that during the Spanish colonial period, the country was once among the last in the world to ring it in? To simplify colonial trade, Spain once assigned the Philippines the same calendar day as its American colonies across the Pacific. This caused the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 on old maps, making the country one day behind its Southeast Asian neighbors. Back then, the local mean time in Manila was around -15:56 UTC (in context: the latest timezone today is Baker Island at -12:00 UTC). Under this setup, a traveler could leave Indonesia on Monday, pass through the Philippines on Sunday, and arrive in Taiwan on Monday again—creating widespread confusion. As trade with the Americas declined and ties with Asia strengthened, colonial authorities decided to shift the Philippines west of the Date Line. Governor-General Narciso Clavería ordered December 30, 1844, to be followed immediately by January 1, 1845, erasing December 31, 1844, from the Philippine calendar. #calendar #time #UnitedNationsDay
