a very important lesson i learned, especially in academia, is that there’s a big difference between people who are your friends and people who are friendly to you, and that you should never confuse the two.

I’ve been gratified hearing from many people who have said that they’ve followed my lead in deciding what they'll do, and not do, in various stages of the pandemic. It’s a particularly confusing time now, so today’s 🧵 is a summary of the choices I'm making these days. (1/25)

I always ask students they're hometown on the pre-semester questionnaire. Best answer ever: "where I can enjoy life with the people I love" 💖💕 – at Harrisonburg, VA
Reading my students' responses to the pre-semester questionnaire I always send out to know them better. I ask if they have a social media account I can use to get to know them better. Amazed at how many are saying stuff like "I haven't posted on social media in years" New times.
Asked my kids if they knew what this plastic thing was on the wall in the kitchen of my daughter's apartment. Their answer: "It's like for delivering internet to the house, right?" 🤦‍♂️ – at Mount Vernon, VA

Only once one is lucky enough to experience learning without grades does it become clear in retrospect how much damage grading has done. (That's probably what Nathaniel Hawthorne was getting at when he wrote, “She had not known the weight until she felt the freedom.”)

The underappreciated educator Selma Wassermann once remarked that taking away students' right to make decisions because they've failed to make "responsible" choices is like taking away their right to read because they can't yet read well.

I feel like there should be more collective soul-searching about commuting. Millions of us did it five days a week, year after year, and it was horrible and expensive, and it turned out to be almost entirely unnecessary.

New semester. Set up slack for the class and even private channels for small teams to use. First thing they do? Use the private slack channels to exchange numbers so they can have a group chat on some other platform. sigh. – at Harrisonburg, VA
