It helped that we lived in small, close-knit communities in both countries. We avoided lumbering impersonal bureaucracies and were able to establish relationships with a relatively small, stable set of administrators on both sides.

For 12 years we raised our 2 girls this way. Sep-Mar in the US, Apr-Aug in Hokkaido. Took about 3 years for the US schools to grok the pattern. Expensive, tiring, but totally worth it to produce 2 amazing bilingual, bicultural people. Hang tough!

Watched the ball drop in Times Square. There was a distinct DGAF energy in the crowd, like they were phoning it in – at Arlington, VA

Wish I had figured this out sooner – at Rapid City, SD
a very important lesson i learned, especially in academia, is that there’s a big difference between people who are your friends and people who are friendly to you, and that you should never confuse the two.

I’ve been gratified hearing from many people who have said that they’ve followed my lead in deciding what they'll do, and not do, in various stages of the pandemic. It’s a particularly confusing time now, so today’s 🧵 is a summary of the choices I'm making these days. (1/25)

I always ask students they're hometown on the pre-semester questionnaire. Best answer ever: "where I can enjoy life with the people I love" 💖💕 – at Harrisonburg, VA
Reading my students' responses to the pre-semester questionnaire I always send out to know them better. I ask if they have a social media account I can use to get to know them better. Amazed at how many are saying stuff like "I haven't posted on social media in years" New times.
Asked my kids if they knew what this plastic thing was on the wall in the kitchen of my daughter's apartment. Their answer: "It's like for delivering internet to the house, right?" 🤦‍♂️ – at Mount Vernon, VA

Only once one is lucky enough to experience learning without grades does it become clear in retrospect how much damage grading has done. (That's probably what Nathaniel Hawthorne was getting at when he wrote, “She had not known the weight until she felt the freedom.”)
