After spending over a decade at Wired, it's time for new adventures. Extremely excited to be joining Grist as a senior writer, covering climate solutions. More solar panels, more heat pumps, more urban gardens. Get in touch if you've got projects to share!

Welp @WIRED laid me off alongside a bunch of other talented people, and on the way out the door I want to appreciate some stories that I was proud to write while reporting on how AI can harm people, accelerate inequality, violate human rights, and threaten society. A thread 🧵:

I’m so grateful to all the workers who trusted me to tell their stories @WIRED these past few years. It’s been an honor and a thrill. I learned from the best and got to write about dogged union fights, donor-conceived family reunions, employees grappling with layoffs, and more.

(Heart)BREAKING NEWS: After 20 years @WIRED , I was among the group of talented editors, writers, designers, and others laid off last Thursday. I am grateful for the career I was able to build there and proud of the work we all did together.

I'm sorry to say that after two years at @WIRED I've been laid off along with many of my beloved and talented colleagues.
I'm so grateful to have worked with journalists and editors who are the very best at what they do, and I am truly going to miss them.

i wish i had stupid cash so that i could scoop the insane talent that is getting laid off in journalism this year and just pay them to whip ass
Just had brutal layoffs across WIRED that hit @WIREDScience especially hard. We lost our amazing editor, @KaraPlatoni, @raminskibba on the space beat, and my fellow doomsday reporter @marynmck. I’m still here, picking up the pieces. But hire these people before someone else does.
Honored to have worked with Greg, and extra honored to call him a good friend. Hire him now please.
I'm no longer @WIRED. I was the luckiest to land there out of college and have freedom to build beats and write big features on a truly boggling array of topics.
Excited for what's next. For now, that's freelancing (unless this industry magically starts hiring)...

Fantastic write-up by @mrMattSimon!
A new study finds that the amount of plastic particles at the ocean surface is skyrocketing. But it's likely a significant underestimate, due to scant data on the smallest of microplastics and nanoplastics. wired.com/story/microplastic…
