#RICO | "...this isn’t only about Ukraine. If a private company can restrict communications used by an American ally during a war, what safeguards protect American troops from the same vulnerability?..." [Anniversary of #TeapotDomeScandal]
American taxpayers pay for military communications. So how did Elon Musk get to decide when Ukraine could use them? According to The Wall Street Journal and CBS News, Musk’s decision led to restrictions on Starshield, SpaceX’s military satellite communications service used by Ukraine. The restrictions disrupted Ukrainian military operations, including drones used to defend against Russian attacks. Then came the explanations. Musk pointed to the US government. Trump denied ordering the restrictions. Administration officials pointed back toward SpaceX. Trump reportedly called Musk to reverse the restrictions and later said service was restored. But Ukrainian officials continued reporting disruptions. Now Congress wants answers. The Pentagon pays SpaceX for military satellite communications. American taxpayers fund these services, yet serious questions remain about who controls them and who can restrict them. On October 22, Senator Richard Blumenthal opened an inquiry demanding answers about the decision, SpaceX’s contracts, and Pentagon oversight. Separately, nine senators from both parties requested a Pentagon Inspector General investigation. They want to know who authorized the restrictions, whether SpaceX acted independently, and what safeguards could prevent this from happening again. And this isn’t only about Ukraine. If a private company can restrict communications used by an American ally during a war, what safeguards protect American troops from the same vulnerability? Ukraine is fighting for its survival against Russia’s invasion. Its soldiers should not have to wonder whether critical communications will suddenly stop working. Congress is asking questions. But questions alone are not accountability. The contracts must be examined. The decision-makers must be identified. And clear safeguards must protect military communications when lives depend on them. No private individual should exercise that kind of power without meaningful oversight. Introduction The editorial “The Non-State Sovereigns” by Vasudevan Mukund examines how private technology companies can exercise strategic power over sovereign states. The reported restriction of Ukraine’s access to Starshield, a satellite communication service associated with SpaceX, illustrates how dependence on privately controlled military technology can influence warfare, national security and geopolitical decision-making. Main Facts in Details - Starlink and Starshield: Starlink provides satellite-based internet connectivity, while Starshield is designed for government and national-security applications. Ukraine has relied on satellite communications for battlefield coordination, intelligence and drone operations. - Private technological control: The article highlights how Elon Musk’s reported intervention in satellite connectivity exposed Ukraine’s dependence on infrastructure controlled by a private company. - Parastate power: Private corporations can acquire state-like strategic influence when governments and militaries depend on their technologies. Unlike elected governments, corporate executives do not possess equivalent democratic accountability. - Military dependence: Modern warfare increasingly relies on satellite networks, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and privately developed intelligence systems. - Geopolitical implications: Technology providers can influence military operations indirectly by changing service availability or operating conditions, potentially affecting the strategic calculations of sovereign states. Challenges - Erosion of strategic autonomy and operational independence. - Concentration of critical technological infrastructure in private hands. - Accountability gaps between corporate authority and public responsibility. - Vulnerability to technological coercion and geopolitical pressure. - Inadequate domestic capabilities in strategic technologies. Constructive Criticism The editorial exposes a fundamental contradiction between technological efficiency and sovereign control. Private innovation can strengthen military capabilities, but excessive dependence creates strategic vulnerabilities. However, corporate participation is not inherently problematic; the central concern is the absence of enforceable safeguards, transparent contractual obligations and credible alternatives. Way Forward - Develop indigenous satellite communication and defence technologies. - Diversify critical suppliers to reduce single-provider dependence. - Establish contractual safeguards for essential military services. - Strengthen public-private accountability and national-security oversight. - Promote technological self-reliance alongside international cooperation. Highlighted Keywords Parastate Power, Strategic Autonomy, Technological Sovereignty, Weaponisation of Interdependence, Private Military Infrastructure, Digital Geopolitics, National Security, Technological Self-Reliance. Conclusion The central lesson is that technological dependence can become a strategic vulnerability when private actors control critical infrastructure. For India, strengthening indigenous capabilities and diversifying technology partnerships are essential to preserving sovereign decision-making in an increasingly interconnected world. #TechnologicalSovereignty #StrategicAutonomy #Geopolitics #NationalSecurity #Starlink #DefenceTechnology #DigitalGeopolitics #AtmanirbharBharat

Make no mistake: Trump and Musk adhering to Russia, and giving them aid and comfort, are going to end up costing the U.S. defense industry literally TRILLIONS of dollars over the long haul. And that's before we even begin to discuss the security implications for the entire West.

Almost all management of the $25 billion American gas project Polar Train LNG left the company following allegations of hidden funding and control by Russian Novatek. This was reported by the Financial Times. The former CEO of the company, Joel Riddle, spoke to the media about concerns regarding a potential violation of US sanctions. Former Polar LNG CEO Joel Riddle said he resigned after discovering that Novatek was secretly financing the project and steering its strategy. "It’s not only unlawful, but it’s not in the US interest to have Russian technology controlling the commercialization of Arctic gas," Riddle told the NYT. The deal was reportedly discussed during US-Russia talks, with potential sanctions relief for Novatek’s Arctic LNG 2 project on the table. Polar LNG denies wrongdoing.
