I'm in a weird position as a fic writer where I'm fine with people sharing my fics but also incredibly uncomfortable with the entitlement everyone is admitting to having when it comes to downloading and sharing other people's work in bulk

I remember reading a fic recently and a commentor left a comment that basically went "OMG we talk about your fic in our discord all the time" and I was like....."you could just leave comments for the author???"

its so crazy how ao3 being down for like 3 weeks could have led to people boosting writers' other socials and connecting with them elsewhere and asking them to crosspost themselves/creating webrings but that would require readerbases having maturity levels above a third grader

The last thing I want to say about this stupid discourse is that it's weird to me to frame it as fic writers being clout hungry. isn't it normal to want people to comment aka talk to you about your fic about the characters you both love? I post fanfic in large part to make friends and participate in the fan community. Of course fic writers aren't owed comments but it gets lonely and demoralizing if no one talks to you!
