While thousands of elementary teachers have been madly trying to learn the reading research, engage in Structured Literacy PD, and learn the science-based instructional strategies that are essential for reading and writing proficiency, many high school teachers have been asking, “hey, what about us?!” 🙋🏻🙋♀️🙋♂️
High school teachers are facing the education equivalent of Mount Everest: the repercussions of 10+ years of Balanced Literacy instruction, ineffective reading remediation, and the daunting task of teaching students who are unable to read, write and spell.
While we must focus on improving instruction for our young learners, we can’t turn our backs on the students we failed to teach in Gr1-8. They have- and deserve- the #righttoread, too.
