I’ve had a few people saying I should be Australian of the Year or nominated for an OAM, and I just want to say that I appreciate that incredibly - HOWEVER, literally all I’ve done is tell the story of renters in Australia, and try make a website that started as 2 google spreadsheets and a little too much Ritalin. None of that compares to the incredible work of people like Grace Tame and @DylanAlcott Further to this, telling the story of renters is the job of the media, which they have demonstrably failed to do over the past few years. We know this is because the media serves the interests of their subscribers - and people who pay for media are generally the wealthy, so they are hesitant to run stories that are against their interests. I’m only able to do what I’m doing because I come from an already privileged position of being a white, male migrant to Australia who lived in Sydney and went to a private school as well as university, with all of the privileges associated. It’s people like my partner Sara who has consistently supported me throughout, @lightnrigid and other unionists who are working tirelessly to get this website functioning and repeatedly deny any requests for attribution that are the heroes (Tim literally won’t even let me send them a few dollars for a coffee - the bastard), as well as advocates like @hierobadge @ArtistAffame @Asher_Wolf and @MChandlerMather that deserve recognition - not some idiot who makes silly videos on tiktok every now and then. I want renters to realise that people with money don’t care about them, and that together we can fix this. Touch one, touch all. If you fuck with a renter, you’ll answer to all of us.
