Yes: handwriting still matters. A new study has confirmed that writing by hand activates far more complex and widespread neural networks in the brain than typing, underscoring its importance for learning and memory. Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology used a high-density EEG cap with 256 electrodes to record brain activity in university students. They found that the intricate, sensory-rich movements involved in handwriting, especially cursive, trigger highly synchronized brain waves across extensive areas of the parietal and central regions. These coordinated patterns are strongly linked to memory formation, cognitive processing, and encoding new information. In contrast, typing, which involves repetitive, simpler finger movements, produced significantly less neural connectivity and engagement. The difference was striking: the brain appears much less active during digital writing. The researchers conclude that the unique motor and sensory experience of holding a pen plays a key role in brain development and learning. As a result, they argue that handwriting instruction should remain a core part of education to support deeper comprehension and cognitive growth in the next generation. In 1898, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany visited Baalbek and was so struck by what he saw that he personally arranged for the first major scientific excavation of the site. The German archaeological team worked from 1898 to 1904. What they expected to find was a well-documented Roman construction project. What they actually found was far more complicated. When they cleared the floor of the Temple of Jupiter down to its foundation layers, they found evidence of continuous human occupation stretching back through the Neolithic period — potentially 10,000 years. People had been living on this hill long before anyone thought the site was significant enough to warrant major construction. This discovery reframed everything. If the site had been occupied continuously for 10,000 years, the massive foundation stones — the Trilithon and the other megaliths forming the western wall — could theoretically predate Roman occupation by thousands of years. The Romans may have inherited them, not built them. This would explain the most haunting silence in Baalbek's historical record: why the Romans, who documented every engineering achievement, left no account of how the most massive foundation stones in their greatest temple complex were placed. The answer the German excavations suggested: the Romans didn't place them. They arrived and found them already there, already ancient, their true origin already lost to memory. The silence wasn't an oversight. It was honest ignorance. © Reddit #archaeohistories

Finland's strategy of building entire apartment blocks for formerly homeless individuals as part of its "Housing First" model has been highly successful, contributing to the near-elimination of homelessness in the country. This came with the creation of apartment blocks specifically designed for homeless individuals. These complexes come with private rooms, mental-health support, job assistance, and social workers on site — helping people stabilize their lives before anything else. The rent automatically adjusts to income, meaning no one is ever priced out again. This approach has already helped Finland achieve the lowest homelessness rate in Europe, proving that stable housing creates a foundation for employment, recovery, and long-term independence.

In the below post we looked at the number of Atlantic cat 4’s & 5’s since 1980. There was an almost 2X increase in the past two decades! Today we look at episodes of Extreme Rapid Intensification. An even bigger impact… There’s been a 6X increase over the same period via @BhatiaKieran Things are certainly changing as the waters continue to warm. A greater ratio of stronger storms, that rapidly intensify BUT importantly not necessarily a higher number of tropical systems overall. This follows well with the projections from climate research over the past couple of decades.
Updated image to include Andrew and two others. I inadvertendly left out A and B's when I added the database in. Doesn't change the message BUT I am sorry about that. Very annoyed at myself!

In my 30 years being a professional meteorologist, I can't say I have ever seen a #Hurricane with better/ more textbook structure than #Melissa in the Atlantic. It's been a Cat 5 all day long with no signs of getting any weaker. That's a rare run! It's now tied for the 10th strongest Atlantic storm on record (winds) 11th (pressure). Cat 5 landfall expected Tuesday on the west side of #jamacia Here's more...

In April, The Biden-Harris Labor Department expanded overtime pay rules. Roughly 4.3 million more workers would have been eligible for OT pay under the new rule. A Trump-appointed judged blocked it yesterday. Go ahead and keep telling me that the GOP is the party of workers.

8PM EDT: This is nothing short of astronomical. I am at a loss for words to meteorologically describe you the storms small eye and intensity. 897mb pressure with 180 MPH max sustained winds and gusts 200+ MPH. This is now the 4th strongest hurricane ever recorded by pressure on this side of the world. The eye is TINY at nearly 3.8 miles wide. This hurricane is nearing the mathematical limit of what Earth's atmosphere over this ocean water can produce.
