Anakin was the Chosen One. He brought balance to the Force. The prequels are cinematically and thematically brilliant because they are mythic. They complete the epic arc of the original trilogy rather than merely preceding it. The original films show Luke’s temptation, refusal, and the final redemption of his father. The prequels reveal why that redemption mattered: Anakin was the instrument who first broke the light-side hegemony of the Jedi Order and then, later, destroyed the Emperor. What the original trilogy resolves, the prequels make inevitable. Together they form a single mythic movement. The prophecy said a Chosen One would come, born of no father, and through him ultimate balance would be restored. The Jedi heard what they wanted to hear: the destruction of the Sith so that the light could reign unchallenged. That is the light-side reading. Obi-Wan says it on Mustafar, “you were supposed to bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness”, because he is speaking from inside the Jedi framework. George Lucas has said versions of the same thing in interviews: the dark side is the imbalance, the light side is the natural state, balance is achieved by ending the Sith. Those statements exist. They are clear. They are also not the whole of what the films do.
